We stayed in the newer part of the Riverside Hotel and had a great time.

Re: Where to stay in Ft. Lauderdale?
I just came back from Fort Lauderdale, I stayed at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort, its a time share, the rooms are really lovely, brand new apartments with an ocean view. I would recommend it, but the front desk staff were terrble

Re: Where to stay in Ft. Lauderdale?
I have stayed pre and post cruises at: The Renaissance hotel I stayed 3 times at the Hyatt Pier 66 Our favorite not IN Ft Lauderdale but it was close by (i think a 10 min drive from the cruise pier) in Hollywood - Hard Rock Hotel which was great and has a great entertainment complex with shops, restaurants, comedy clubs, bars, etc attached to the hotel

When I was in Florida last week we also stayed right near the Hard Rock (we stayed one week at one time share, and the second week at another) The Hard Rock is land locked, so you won't get any beach time in that area.
