Wowee...Exchange rate at the moment...
I just got my bank statement from my trip to Florida last week, the exchange rate I got using my debit card was
£1 = $1.37.
Now is the time to travel to the UK people, if you dreamed of coming to London (or Manchester of course) now is the time to do it!!!

Ok really stupid question because I don't know about these things - what was it before? Also, does that mean that US$1 = 1.37 pounds or the other way around?

In September before the pound tanked it was £2 = 1 USD. When I was there in October the exchange rate was about £1.50 to the USD. So say you bought a shirt in september that was £40 it would cost you about $80!
May have to plan another trip to visit our friends soon at this rate!

Nope, other way round, it was £1 = $2 USD.
Thats .50p to $1 USD.
At the moment its £1 = $1.37! At least thats what it was when I paid with a credit card last week!

yup, you can buy currency at your bank! they prob will charge a small fee and might not give you the exact same exchange rate you see online (they'll give you their exchange rate) but it might be worth it in case it's not as favorable later in the year!
