What could it be? Who should I call?
for the past 3-4 days, there's rarely any hot water in the shower.. taking a shower every morning is like a battle I have to gear myself up to
there's plenty of hot water to do the dishes and wash clothe.... so what can be the problem???

Is there a separate heater for the water in the shower?

I had the same thing happen to me couple of months ago... it turned out, it was a problem with a pipe in the basement (we were the only apartment that had this problem)...

I don't even know what we have, growing up my parents have a hot water heater in the utility room, I went to look at mine, there is nothing but a furnice... where are the water reserved in??
Is a plumber who I should call. I feel like a complete idiot (FH grew up in a Manhattan apartment, so he doesn't know better either!)

I would call a plumber. You probably don't have a hot water heater (some houses don't, it's actually not necessary), there is probably something wrong with a pipe somewhere as another poster said.
