walking on leash help
How can I get Ollie to walk nicely on a leash? She's constantly pulling me and DH and I'm sick of it. I've read to just stop walking but the second I start again she continues to pull. If I keep stopping we'll never get anywhere! Any ideas?

Try a harness. This is what worked for Cooper. We start with him at my right side and I pull the leash up and we walk and he always stays right at my side.

That's great that is worked for Cooper, but I actually think the harness could cause a dog that is pulling to pull more because now you are putting the dog out more in front of you. You have so much less control with a harness than with a collar. A pinch collar might work better. I hate choker collars because that's what it does, the poor dog just keeps choking itself. With the pinch collar insead of choking them they just get a little pinch. I know some people don't like pinch collars but in my opinion they are more humane because a squeeze is better than a choke.

yea she actually has a harness now and she still pulls. What is a pinch collar?

The first thing I would say it to immediately get rid of the harness and get a collar. You have almost no control with a harness because the dog's head is free. A pinch or prong collar is one of those collars that instead of tightening and closing in on their neck it has prongs and pinches instead of chokes. The following picture depicts a prong collar. You can just google it too. I do not currently have a dog but I used to train them and I competed in obedience trials with my previous dog. I loved the prong collar because no more choking or missing fur.

I'm taking dog training now and it was suggested to try keeping the leash short and to keep the dog on your left (assuming you are walking against traffic to keep them away from the car side) then as you are walking and the dog starts to pull.. to not only stop, but turn around and walk back in the other direction. She also suggested when pulling to stop and make them sit before proceeding.
I haven't really tried these though because of my dog's many issues, pulling isn't one of them

She's pretty little I was told not to use a collar on a small dog. I wonder if this applies to the pinch collar

I'll try the sit thing. I've already tried the pulling in the other direction trick and she just runs in the other direction and continues to pull. We also live on a busy street so it's hard to keep her attention, she gets so distracted by everything going on

They are the same thing. I would still get rid of the harness though and use a collar so you can control her head.

If you have DVR on your TV tape the national geographic chanel at 2pm every day.. cesar milan will show you how to do this.. I learned everything about training my dog from him.. I read all of his books as well..

i have heard harnesses also cause pulling
i am in the process of teaching my dog this as well...so far he has semi-stopped pulling! when he pulls, i stop and say no pull, then he stands there and then we continue walking--it took a few tries though! every now and then he still pulls!

I am also a HUGE fan of the prong collar. Most other collars (martingale, harness, choke) don't seem to work like the prong collar does.
As far as the dog being small, I would bring him to the store and get one that is small enough for him. They make all sizes and you can remove links. You aren't going to leave it on all the time, just when you go for walks. Make sure you remove it when he is in the house or just playing in the yard. They can hook their feet or other things into the collar and you don't want that.

you can also get a double handle leash. casey's has a 2nd handle closer to the collar area. this way I can hold her right next to me with the 2nd handle and make her walk side by side with me.

Me too! My dog walks like a champ now because of using his methods. She is a big dog so it was very challenging to train her on the leash. I feel so proud when I take her for long walks.

I've heard about prong collars being the magic solution too, although we haven't used one. I've heard a warning though to make sure you fit the prong collar correctly so it is only pinching the skin, not causing problems for your dog.
We have a two handle leash also, and will have a two part walk. One part with him right next to me, short handle, walking fast and not sniffing. Then we use his release command so he knows it's ok to sniff and use the long handle.
If he pulls badly, I have been stopping, turning slowly in a clockwise direction so that he's next to me and saying "heel, heel, heel" to teach him to stay by my side. He doesn't like being interrupted in a good sniff, so he's learned not to pull.
He's gotten a lot better, so now I walk him on the retractable. We use "wait" when we approach a corner to check for traffic and "come", "sit" when a car is coming. I'm also starting to use "with me" when he's too far ahead, and I want him to come back a little bit but not all the way.
Our methods were more about voices than physical touch but it's still a work in progress. He's over a year old now, and it's getting easier. How old is your dog? You could train him in your backyard too, so that you're not training on the walk. You're just reinforcing on the walk.

Definitely agree!!! The show is called The Dog Whisperer.....he's amazing. Watching him and using his methods was how I got my dog to stop pulling.

thanks to Gerty.. we got the prong collar and it works amazing!!
our dog was a terrible walker.. and now she doesnt pull anymore! that collar is a miracle! and it looks scarier than it is!
