OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA

DH & I would like to plan a road trip down to the outer banks for this coming May.

Only thing is we know nothing about the area or where to stay. I looked online but I'm not sure about which part of the area to stay in.

Can anyone who's been there before help us out... as far as where to stay, wht to do...etc..

Also - it will more than likely be the 2 of us and we would love to stay somewhere on the beach. Most of the places that I see - seem to be in town within minutes of the beaches. Is it worth it to stay in town?

Any info would greatly be appreciated.

TIA!!!!!!!!

Re: OUTER BANKS OF NORTH CAROLINA

hi! my parents have a house down there, so we are down there a lot.
my parents house is on Cape Hatteras. its a national seashore, so a lot of it is preserved, and its not very built up. but, there is still a lot to do: a movie theater, restaurants, sailboat/kayak/wave runner rentals/mini golf... theres also a few spots where you drive on the beach if you have 4 wheel drive.

BUT, if you want a little bit more "action", you might want to stay in Duck, Nags Head, or Kitty Hawk. they are all really nice, but just have more "stuff" around: more shopping, etc.

lets see... while you're down there, you can go to the wright brothers first flight memorial, which is cool to see. you can walk up the cape hatteras lighthouse, rent a jet ski, take a free ferry ride to ocracoke island for lunch. theres not a ton to do on ocracoke: you can see some wild horses, have lunch, theres a small lighthouse there you can see... but the ferry ride is free, you take your car on, and its a nice "break" from the beach.

as far as where to stay, i don't know of many hotels down there, but you could rent a small house or condo. check out sunrealtync.com, hatteras realty, midgett realty, surf or sound realty.... their websites should have searches where you can search for the type of place you want Chat Icon let me know if you have any questons! have fun!!
