Anyone delivering at Columbia Presbyterian...
Did anyone see that the cost for the stork club (private room) changed as of January 1st 2009. It went from $400 total for your stay to $400 per NIGHT!!!

I'm delivering at Cornell Presbyterian, not Columbia, but the private rooms at Cornell are I think $650 above insurance per night. It's nuts.

My poor DH is pulling his hair out - when I had DD June 2007 it only cost us $400 total (which is what they charged for the private rooms for the entire stay - I had a section and PIH so they ended up keeping me one extra night).
This June so far we found that our insurance NOW charges a $500 copay for me - and one for the baby! So that is already $1k - NOW I have to pay an additional $400 a night for at least 4 nights b.c I'm a repeat section. The joke is that they L&D rooms are gorgeous - but they haven't renovated their regular rooms in geez forever - and from what I hear they STILL haven't. Don't get me wrong they were fine and you get a private bathroom - but I think they haven't changed in about 30 years (according to the nurses and my old OB's office).
I think Cornell has updated their maternity wards but I could be wrong. $650 a night is high - but is that a new charge? I guess after paying $400 total for the entire stay - to then pay $400 a night seems like a big change esp for what they gave me.
Etd to add - yes sorry I was talking about above insurance - I have no idea how much insurance pays so I don't include that only what I have to pay OOP to get the room.

We are going to pay for it-- this is something that I will not compromise on. DH said we could also get the lowest suite (which is basically just the private room with better furniture) if there are no private rooms available-- there are 16, but there are no guarantees.

I want the private room too. The scary thing is when we went on our tour, ALL the private rooms were full, plenty of shared rooms open, but apparently the price is not stopping anyone...so I'm just hoping when I deliver it's slow there so i don't get shut out.

The maternity ward at Cornell seemed new...newish anyway. The private rooms were beautiful. Shared rooms were decent...nothing special. Nothing looked like an old hospital room though. And yes, the L&D rooms are gorgeous as well.
But yeah, that's quite a jump from $400 for the whole stay to $400 a night...my guess is that they have to compete. I know the private room charges at Mt. Sinai are comparable to Cornell's as well. It's crazy how much they charge.
I feel your pain.....I'm on one of those shittty insurance plans that's a high deductible to begin with and then my insurance covers 80% and I cover 20% of the remaining total cost of everything. So delivering this child is going to put us in the poorhouse I think.

Of course it's not stopping anyone-- it's Manhattan!
I haven't even seen the semi-private rooms there-- which that name is LAUGHABLE btw. Semi-private I guess means just not in the hallway. They were all full when we were on our tour, and all my friends who delivered there got the private room.
Honestly for 2 nights-- it's the best $1200 to $1300 dollars spent. If you have a C, well-- IMO you need it more, even though it's so much more $$$$.

ESPECIALLY if i'm going to be a c, I can't picture spending 3-4 days in a room with another family and their baby and their visitors. It would drive us nuts personally. I was trying to convince myself that I could swing a shared room if I went natural since it may only be for one night...but I don't even know about that. We just added the private room cost to our budget forecast. 
The shared rooms honestly look like a typical hospital room.... 2 beds side by side, split by a curtain. Just seemd like too close of quarters for me...not in that situation anyway. I want my own space after going through delivery...however I end up delivering.

That is a crazy amount of money to go from 400 total - to 400 a night. But, I couldn't put a price tag on the private room - that was the best thing ever and especially after the c-section!!!

I know there is no way I can share a room - for multiple reasons, esp b.c DH is going to try to work during the day since my parents will have Kaitlyn - and come and stay nights with me - which he won't be able to do if we have a semi private.
The thing that kills me is that it isn't just the room price but now the $500 copay that is added in as of Jan 1st -that I didn't have when I delivered with Kaitlyn. If I was still working like I was when pregnant with DD it would be a different story but now that we are on one salary that is a lot to suddenly cough up without a lot of advance warning. KWIM?
