Options for when a dog passes away...?

My parents called last night to tell me the family dog has passed away. We are driving to LI to visit them this weekend and my dad mentioned something about asking DH to help him bury the dog in the backyard (the dog's body is currently in the shed, I guess my Dad thinks the cold is "preserving him", I know that sounds a little screwy but my dad is an emotional wreck right now. Anyway, it looks the it isn't going to go above freezing anytime soon, so I assume the ground will be too frozen to dig and bury poor Spike. (if that is even a legal thing to do?)

If that is true, what are his alternatives? Can you get a dog creamated? What else can you do with the body?

They live in East Islip if that helps at all.

TIA!

I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to bury a dog in the backyard although I know people do it all the time.

We just had our cat buried at bidawee pet cemetary. I just couldn't have him cremated.

However, if you want to cremate, you can either call your vet and they can arrange it or go through bidawee. I think there are other places on LI that do it too but your vet would be a good start. There are 2 options when it comes to cremation. You can do a mass cremation where they put the dog with whatever other animals they have. This is the cheapest option. You will not get the ashes back. The next option is a private cremation where you will get the ashes back.

Do you know how much any of these options cost? <I am at work right now and can't really make this phonecall Chat Icon >

So sorry for your loss. We had my dog cremated when he passed. I don't know how much it is though because I was an absolute wreck and my parents took care of it for me.

I had my dog cremated at the place below.. they also have a cemetary. I don't remember how much anything was, but I remember the cremation was by weight and whether it was done with other pets as a group or if it was your pet alone (wanting your pet's ashes back)
