Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
If both of you have it, then there is a chance a baby could have CF. If he doesn't have it, then you most likely won't have a baby with CF.

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
I am a carrier - and DH had to get tested....he isn't so DS was fine. If he was a carrier as well (DH) then I think there would be a 25% chance DS would have it, and 50% chance he would be a carrier. I don't think it's that common for both husband and wife to be carriers. I feel your pain though, I was totally stressed out during this testing time,

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
Try not to worry just yet. My DH is a carrier for something else but I'm not, so I've done my best to put it out of my mind As long as you're both not a carrier for it I think it's a very slim chance of your DC having it.

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
I tested posative for a carrier but dh tested and was negative. I'm pretty sure if only one person has it you dont have to worry about it. and if he is posative it can get expensive but they can do ivf and actually remove the cystic fibrosis gene so your baby woulndt get the disease.

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
It is very, very rare that both you and your DH are a carrier...

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
im a carrier of spinal muscular atrophy. Thankfully dh isent. My dr said if we were both carriers then we had like other ppl said about a 25% chance of having a baby with it. My dr said if we both tested positive for the gene it would be wise to do ivf w/ pgd.
You can be a carrier of the gene and ur dh isent but u can still give the gene to your child. (not that they will have CF but will be carrying the gene like u)
Good luck!!!

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
Thanks everyone for replying. I think I was so freaked out last night bc the results were unexpected. DH is getting tested tomorrow morning so we'll keep our fingers crossed till we get the results.

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
My sister and her DH are both carriers of the same gene for CF. They found out after she conceived. My neice just turned 4 years old and isn't even a carrier herself.

Re: Cystic fibrosis gene
Like everyone said, you both need to have the gene. I am pos for it and thank goodness DH is neg. I actually tested positive for 2 other genetic disorders, which defintely freaked me out. But, most genetic disorders need 2.
Friends of mine didn't know they both had the gene. Their first child has CF and honestly because of medical reseach their daughter is doing better than expected...though of course not easy. Their 2nd child doesn't have it. So, even if you both have it it doesn't always mean the child will have it.
Hopefully DH's results are negative and it will become a non issue, but the gene could get passed to the child. its something to remember when your DC is trying to have a baby (ok, way ahead of myself here).
