What would you do..(choosing new Dr.)
We just moved 3 hours away from my hometown. I love my Dr. there and I have never been to anyone else. I also love the small Hospital I delivered in the first time, and all of my friends live in the area.
DH thinks I should go back there to have this child rather than finding a new Dr. here, delivering in a HUGE city hospital and being where no one knows us.
Would I be crazy to try and do this with Dr's that are 3 hours away? I would most likely be a scheduled section and I can stay with my family.

Honestly, I'd be too afraid to be 3 hours away from where I'd be delivering.
Even with a scheduled c-section, are you going to drive 6 hours total to go to your Dr. appointments? Especially at the end when you go every 2 weeks then every week?

I would stay a few days after/before each appointment. I still have my bed at home ;)

I would find a new doctor. I wouldn't want to travel that much, and it is nice to have a doctor close by.

I agree. I had a couple of instances where I needed to go to the hospital to be checked out in the middle of the night, and it's just better to be able to go to a hosptial quickly where they know your Dr. Remember, if you had to go to a different hosptial for whatever reason, your Dr. cannot give medical orders on your behalf if they are not affiliated with that hosptial.

3 hours is pushing it. That is 6 hours just driving back and forth. You'd have to waste an entire day to go to each doctor's appointment.

As much as its nice to stay with what you know, I can't see being 3 hours away from my doctor. I think even 45 minutes is far and my SIL did that.

Honestly, I would find a new doc. I'm only delivering 45 minutes away (with no traffic) & everyone thinks I'm insane. Your appointments will get pretty frequent towards the end (bi-weekly & then weekly) & it will be a real pain travelling that far so often. God forbid you have an emergency, you wouldn't be able to travel all that way. You'd have to go to a local hospital with a doc you won't know. Plus, even scheduling a c-section is no guarantee. You could go into labor before the scheduled date & I cannot imagine 3 hours in a car in labor being any fun.

Well I would probably find a new Dr. But I guess it depends a lot on a few factors - which big city hospital are you talking about? Cornell? Columbia? versus some much smaller hospitals that might not have the highest NICU (if something should happen) would be the better choice. Is the local hospital your current doctor in a much better hospital?
Here is the issue with the 3 hour away hospital. Dr's visits would be a pain. What if you have an issue and need to see the dr ASAP. What if you go into labor early and have a short labor.
I travel 1- 1.5 hours and it is a pain I couldn't imagine going three hours. So if it was me I would find a new OB.

I also was about 35-45 minutes from LIJ w/ no traffic. I had a pretty quick labor process and honestly, by the time we left home to head for the hospital, I was so scared because the contractions were coming so quickly (and my doctor said to wait some more before coming!!!).
