vitamins prescribed by your ob

i was taking regular cvs prenatal vitamins prior to conceiving and upto my first doc visit, i showed them to my doc and he prescribed something else for me, well i go to fill it and i had to pay $48 (for 1 month supply) - insurance only covers 1/2 because they're some type of new capsule + tablet combination

is anyone else taking what their doc prescribed or are you sticking to your regular prenatals?

eta: dont get me wrong, im not about to go against what the doctor ordered & $48 for vitamins to help me and the baby is not a lot, i was just a little surprised

honestly, I would NEVER pay $48 a month for a prenatal...buy one OTC...that is ridiculous Chat Icon

ETA - I pay for my lovenox (blood thinners) and metanx (which is basically folic acid broken down that I need due to a blood disorder) but my prenatals are OTC (20 bucks for a 3 month supply) Chat Icon

I know its crazy the cost of the prenatals. Dh just saw how much and asked me "why dont you just take generic or over the counter?" Chat Icon Good thing he only saw now.. it was my last time filling the prescription.

Well I was taking Duet Prenatal with DHA - and it cost me $50 a month - now my insurance just changed and the 1st non generic I get costs a $50 deduct + the $50 charge. I called and spoke with my pharmacy and they told me they only cost like $54 out of pocket so I was thinking of maybe going that way - BUT then they said they just started making my prenatals as a generic one that has the same ingredients. So I'm going to switch to the generic brand.

You might want to see if that is an option for you.

What do you do to supplement the difference? I found that the OTC (my OB and Pharmacist both agreed) that the OTC don't have the same level of vitamins and folic acid as the scripts do - so you do take extra folic acid or other pills to make up that difference?

I would just take an extra folic acid but due to a blood clotting disroder that I have, my body does not break down folic acid so I am on a prescription called Metanx which is a high dose of folic acid in it's broken down state Chat Icon

Re: vitamins prescribed by your ob

I have been taking Duet, but my DH's union doesn't cover vitamins at all, so I was paying $60 out of pocket. I talked to my OB and he told me absolutely NOT to do this. He said to just get OTC prenatals, but to make sure they have Folic Acid in them.

I've been taking PrenateDHA, which my OB prescribed, and they cost me $25 every 2 months. (they fill the script 2 months at a time) That seems like a lot of money you're paying for yours, my goodness!!

I take the target prenatals, and they are just as good as any prescription Vitamin, and they have everthing in them. I pay 7.99 for a bottle of 200. And they are easy on the belly.

Re: vitamins prescribed by your ob

i buy OTC - i forget the name, but they're pink and come in a yellow bottle.

For some reason, my body doesn't completely dissolve capsules (I only learned this after seeing the whole PrimaCareOne capsules in the toilet...ewwies) and I need to take plain pills with no coating.

I also take a sublingual containing b-6, b-12, biotin and 800 mcg folic acid. At least if I throw up the pill (which is common lately), I know this sublingual got down.

Re: vitamins prescribed by your ob

I have been taking Duet DHA and I do mail order so it cost me $80 for 3 months.... I rather pay for the rx then take OTC because my dr. said If I take OTC I have to take the prenatal vit, plus expectra and a vit. supplement... and it just does not pay to have one to take so many pills but with doing the math its about the same a month....
