Is it odd that...
My OB doesn't have the U/S machine in her office and she was trying to detect the baby's heartbeat with her doppler and she was unsuccessful. I was then sent directly to get an U/S where the machine picked it up no problem - 163 bpm. I am currently 11w 3d. Isn't it unusual to not pick up the heartbeat on the doppler at this point?
TIA for your help!

I think it's strange that she doesn't have an u/s machine in the office. I would think most obs do - or at least the last 3 obs I've been to did.

Re: Is it odd that...
the baby could just be in a spot that makes the doppler detection difficult...like towards your back maybe.

My OB's office doesn't have a u/s machiene either. I think there is one in their second office, which is their primary location. I have read that the doppler is hit or miss. Plus I've read that it has to be pointed in the exactly right to hear anything.
Glad everything went well

I know it is so annoying but there are literally 2 OB offices in my area and neither has an U/S machine in their office! I hate it!

Re: Is it odd that...
I don't think it's strange at all. My OB doesn't have a sono machine in their office either. It really depends on the insurance they accept too. Alot of insurance companies will only cover a certain amount of sonos, to be done at outside facilities.
The doppler, especially early on can sometimes be difficult to find the heartbeat. My Dr. would often tell me in the beginning not to get upset if she couldn't find it, or couldn't find it right away. It can depend on the position of the baby as well.

Thank you for easing my mind, I was trying not to be concerned but it's difficult that the heart is beating and I can see it but we can't hear it yet!!

At my 16 week visit for DD#2, my doctor couldn't find the heartbeat for a very long time. I was FREAKING! It's probably not that unusual--babies move around a lot!

Re: Is it odd that...
I was told depending on your size and the babys position, that could make it difficult to detect heartbeat.

It's not unusual at all that the heartbeat wasn't detected by the doppler at 11 weeks. You're still pretty early for that.

Re: Is it odd that...
at my 8 week appointment we heard the heartbeat on the u/s machine but at my 12 week appointment the dr couldnt pick it up on the doppler, which made me nervous but she was not the least bit concerned, on NYE at my bff house we used her doppler and i picked it up after a few tries. I was a little bit shy of 14 weeks.

Re: Is it odd that...
The 1st dr. I went to did not have a machine in her office. Sometimes the locatio of the baby can make it tricky to find the heartbeat. XOXOXO BOTB

Re: Is it odd that...
With both my DDs I had an anterior placenta, so it was harder to hear the baby's heartbeat using the doppler...it also meant that I felt the baby move later (20+weeks)...

I do think its odd that there isn't a u/s machine or that your doc didn't try another doppler.

Re: Is it odd that...
Not to worry, like others said it could be the position of the baby.
As for having an U/S in office not odd at all IMO. I happen to go to a big practice where they have everything in one building, but I know that is not always the norm. Some of the smaller practices may not have access to all equipment.

Re: Is it odd that...
at 13 weeks my OB couldn't find his heartbeat - it was b/c he hadn't moved up from my pelvic bone yet - or something like that .......... -
He gave me an internal sono, which he has in the office, but he doesn't have the normal sono machine - I go to the hospital for those

My OB has an ultrasound machine but as far as I know, most 20 week (level II ultrasounds) are done at a different location
mine was done near the hospital too

Re: Is it odd that...
My doctor has an ultrasound machine in her office, she used it to confirm my pregnancy at six weeks. At my eight weeks appointment she used the doppler and found the heartbeat, you had to listen very closely to hear it. She's found it everytime with the doppler.

Re: Is it odd that...
My doc was retiring so her U/S was ancient- she couldn't find my heartbeat at my 39 week appointment. It was terrifying! I ended up getting induced that day due to the stress from that fun incident
