Why wasn't that info on their resume? If the person conducting the interview was asking in reference to check that you actually graduated when you said you did, I would be fine with it. If it were an applicant that went to the same school as I did and I was interviewing them, I would pass it off as they wanted to know if we knew the same people/professors. If it was someone random, then yes, probably fishing for your age.

I would discourage asking the question. The year you received your degree isn't relevant to the job - only that you've received a degree (or had equivalent work experience) and are up to date on current HR laws.
