I don't know. I guess if you heard a heartbeat in your pelvis, keep a finger on your own wrist or neck to detect your own heartbeat. If the one in your pelvis is different/faster, that could be the baby. Let me know if it works, my mom's a nurse and I would try it with her stethescope.

I just read in Baby Bargains that a GOOD stethoscope is better than an at home doppler (or perceived safer) and to have your OB show you where to use it to hear the baby's heartbeat.

As a fellow medical practitioner, I can tell you that I listened at least once a week for the first 20 weeks or so with my Littman Master Cardiology (the battery operated, amplified one) and couldn't hear a darn thing. I FINALLY got a heartbeat from the baby around week 24. So....you have quite a ways to go until you can listen through your stethoscope. Sorry...BUT, the good news is, after that time, I can listen to my little one's heart whenever I want. Chat Icon

We tried listening to the baby's heartbeat with DH's stethoscope but I couldn't hear a clear heartbeat like at the obgyn. There was too much background noise.
