It is not a wasted gift in the least. The positive thinking helped me get through every month that it did not (or could not) "happen" for us. I find that gift very thoughtful.
Though I risk sounding VERY corny, motherhood is truly in the heart. There are so many women in this world without children of their own who have parenting skills far better than those who have had children themselves. So this gift that your DH has gotten for you represents what you already are - a mother in your heart. You will be one step ahead WHEN (not if) your miracle happens.
