Depends. They may try external first and if they don't see well enough they'll go internal...or they'll go right for the internal just to get right to it. I don't remember what mine was....

it was both... external first and I was ****** because she wouldn't move the screen so i could see!!!
then, the internal...DH came in for that. we saw the baby. she/he was lying down, but we all the vertebrae in the spine...it was AMAZING! we also saw her little hands peeking out and her feet.... so cute!!!!
