We want to get a doggie!!
We are looking for a puppy or young dog. Something that doesn't shed much at all. Hypoallergenic.
I have a 6 year old DS. Extremely gentle with pets and has been around dogs since he was a itty bitty.
We used to have a Boston Terrier but he passed away. We bought him at a pet store (before we knew about all the puppy mill stuff) and he came with loads of medical problems. We barely had him a few months.
I would like to see what others recommend. I am open to all suggestions.

Someone in my work building has a brownish Havanese puppy and he's SO cute.
I was reading about hypoallergenic dogs and forget which breeds they were, but I kept seeing that they require more grooming and haircuts than other dogs.
I'm sorry I don't have much to offer on the subject, only that you should research the amount of time you'll have to spend on grooming per week/month. My sister had a Bichon Frise that was supposed to be hypoallergenic and my husband had terrible allergy symptoms after being around him for only 30 minutes. However, he's symptom free with our Labrador.
If you have family members that have allergies, I would arrange to spend time with the dog before you adopt/purchase just to make sure.

I definitely agree with this. Sometimes it is not the dog that someone is allergic to, but the mange or "dust" that can collect on the dog. DH cannot go anywhere near his husky since his parents kept it when he moved. He had no problem with the dog for years prior. Well he bathed the dog every 2 months and brushed it daily. His parents rarely brush the dog and bathe it twice a year The coat holds dust and mange, which DH is allergic to. We have 5 dogs in our house, including a Shiba Inu that has the same type of fur as a husky & DH has no problems.
As far as maintenance, you could keep a puppy cut on a Havanese if you are afraid of matting or maintenance. It is not as easy as some breeds, however it is worth it to have the proper pet in your home. A Boston is relatively low-maintenance grooming wise compared to many other breeds, so I would definitely speak to someone with experience about the frequency/ease/cost of grooming. Other dogs that are considered allerg-friendly are Shih-tzu's, which have very long hair, and Chinese Cresteds, which also have long hair (not fur). They require a different kind of grooming b/c they have hair that is not unlike human hair, rather than fur.
Shanti (on this board) is involved with Havanese rescue and can be a great source of information for you.
Also, if you had a Boston, did your DC have a reaction to that dog? BTs are not known to be allergy-friendly dogs. I am just wondering what the kind of allergy your DC has.

I agree what the PP said about the havanese. We have a havanese and while we don't have any children our friends have brought over their kids and ollie is great with them. They are hypoallergenic, DH is very allergic but he's fine with Ollie. However, we do have a friend that comes over and says he has had allergic reactions to Ollie when he leaves our house.

We have 3 Havanese and I agree with what the other posters said. Havs are wonderful dogs!
I am a volunteer for Havanese Rescue. If you are interested in going that route, feel free to FM me.
