is this a "normal" occurrence when you're exchanging money?
I called around and found out that Chase changes dollars to Euros for a flat fee of $5, great!
so DH and I go there today and at the end of the transaction, the teller tells us that he'll call us when the Euros come in, by Tuesday the latest then gave us a receipt to hold on to.
I was under the impression that they would have the money there.
just wondering if this is normal.

I do not think most banks keep foreign currency on hand. So therefore they have to request it from their central bank.

Yes, some banks have some currencies in stock from time to time, but many times it has to be sent to the bank and you might have to wait.
Once I had a large sum of money sent to me in the post...how strange that was.

That's probably what it is. In all honestly you will probably get a better exchange rate but taking money out of an ATM when you get there.

Its their responsibility to get the money to me, so I don't care if they send a small man on a camel, as long as they take responsibility for it! It arrived safely.

Yes. Most banks do not keep foreign currency in their vaults.

It's normal practice for Chase to do that.
I always found that I got a really good rate when I just used the ATMs in Europe.

That's normal for a lot of banks. DH "ordered" Euros from Chase before our honeymoon. He had to wait a few days before he could pick them up.

Agreed. But it's a good idea to have some cash on hand before you leave, too.

I'm surprised by all the responses.
When we were leaving for our honeymoon Dh exchanged several thousand dollars for euros and they had it on hand and it was a Chase bank as well. I guess some banks have it but most don't as it seems.

Re: is this a "normal" occurrence when you're exchanging money?
I have never done this b/c the exchange isn't worth it.
there are atm's at every airport.
we just find one and take money out when we get off the plane. easy at pie...never had a problem.
although, you may have had better luck going to a branch of a euro bank based here...they may have had the cash upfront.

I've never felt the need to get Euros before a trip. It's so easy to just go to an ATM. The exchange rate is so much better too. Just give your bank a heads up before going.

I had to order Euros once from Citibank. They don't carry foreign currency typically in the branch.

I disagree, it's not worth the $$ to exchange here to bring some with you "to have on hand".
I bring some US$ with me "just in case". If for some reason I can't find an ATM (which in the 35+ countries I've been to has never been a problem), I can just exchange the $$s for local currency until I find an ATM. Yes, the exchange rate there is ridiculous, but you'll almost never have to fall back on that plan, so it's worth the risk.

I got a pretty good exchange rate. and the $5 fee was very reasonable I think.
I just came back from Chase with the euros.

banks don't usually have foreign currency on hand...
We went to an Amex travel center before we went...I forget how much it was but they have currency on hand. (most do)
