Re: Montreal vs Toronto
I love both!! It's COLD in February though!
Montreal is beautiful, especially the old part of the city. It feels like you are in Europe. It's been a long time since I've been to both.

We've never been to Montreal, so I can't compare the two for you ..
But we loved Toronto, it was similar to a smaller cleaner NYC. We went to the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Shoe Museum and the CN Tower while we were there.

Re: Montreal vs Toronto
I've been to Toronto a number of times - I've never been to Montreal - but I've been to Quebec city.
I'd DEFINITELY go to Montreal. I like Toronto a lot - but it's like the Canadian equivalent to NYC. There's a lot to do - but if you are really familiar with NYC, there's not much that's different. Quebec City (and I have heard Montreal) is so much more European in its architecture, ambience, etc.
Winter Carnivale is during February - it's generally in Quebec city - but there might be stuff going on in Montreal.
How long are you thinking of going? DH and I went to Quebec city for 3 nights a few summers ago and we still rave about it - the city was STUNNINGLY GORGEOUS. I've been to Paris, London, Rome, Brussels, Bruge, Istanbul, Edinburgh, Dublin, Galway - and a bunch of other places - and Quebec City is right up there as one of my favorites for charm, romance, food, and wine.
Stick to the old city in Montreal for ambience - or go to Quebec City instead - you wont be disappointed!
Have fun!

Re: Montreal vs Toronto
DH travels to both places several times a year for work, and although he definitely enjoys both cities, he prefers Montreal. Like PPs have said, he feels Toronto is very similar to NYC. Montreal is older, more charming, lots of shops and pubs with live music. He did say that French is very much more prominent in Montreal, however. Either city sounds like a great choice to me!

We went to Montreal for a hockey game in February, and it just happened to be the week of Winter Carnivale. It was great. Ice sculptures, synchronized Fire displays, walking entertainers, etc. If you can coordinate to go at that time, I'd recommend it.
If you're going during that time of year, you just need to be prepared for the weather. Earlier this week I was watching the news and with the wind chill Montreal was -20 degrees. We woke up one morning to an ice storm that happened overnight. If it was NYC, the city would have been a slowdown - but in Montreal this happens every other day. We put on our boots, all of our gear, but still couldn't walk around the city it was so slippery. Yet the women going to work in high heels was walking right by us.
And yes, the main language there is French, but most restaurants, etc will have English on the menu too. Don't get cocky and say "Bon Jour" to someone because then they think you know the language and start talking to you. If you say 'hello' they automatically switch to English. I said Bon Jour once and was screwed and then needed to say "Umm, yeah, English please..."
I hope to goto Toronto too, we were actually planning on going last weekend, but we needed to cancel the trip.
Enjoy.
