Using Discover card in Europe?
DH looked it up (not sure how) and found out that they don't take Discover in Europe, anywhere.
does anyone know if that's true? we have other credit cards, but like using Discover for points.

We used our Amex and some places didn't even take that!
We mostly used our debit, called our bank before going to get rate exchange rate..etc..etc...
Then we used our amex to take out cash b/c amex money exchanges are in each city and they gave good rates.
I could see Discover being a little difficult b/c even around here a lot of places don't take it.

when Discover first came out, it was a challenge sometimes using it. but I have not had any issues in many years - it seems to me like everywhere I shop takes it.

I don't know about Amsterdam, but we had a very difficult time using the Amex in Paris. Mostly they accept Visa and MasterCard. Also, just a suggestion, before you go, let your credit card company know you will be using your card in Europe. Good thing I had my cards with me, because DH's M/C kept getting denied. It turned out they thought it was fraudlent activity on the card!

I think you will struggle to use it in Europe, I would stick to Visa/Mastercard, and check about chip and pin.

Discover is not as widely accepted anywhere as Visa and MC.
I would use either one of those.

they don't. we are never able to use it in Europe.
Capital One Bank is the ONLY M/C or Debit card that doesn't charge crazy fees either.
when we went to Switz in the summer, I opened a Cap One checking account and used the debit mastercard for all purchased.
I also have a Cap One CC.
citi, chase, boa...all charge INSANNE %'s. being that we travel A LOT..it adds uP!

Visa is no. 1, MC no. 2.
Be sure to let your cc co. know you will be abroad so they don't put a hold on your account for irregular charges!

Yes, the chip is an issue. One of my cards doesn't have it, so I had to ask the cashier to swipe it rather than using the machine myself.
I wouldn't even bother trying to use a Discover card.

thank you again for this info! I called capital one master card today and they told me based on my purchase history, I probably would have had a problem using it in Europe. but they have all the info now and even gave me a special # to call them collect if I do encounter any problems.

Yes, Amex is still not widely acccepted and Discover even less.
Visa and Mastercard are the best. Make sure you know your pin. It's usually requested.
