Level II----a little worried

We went this morning for the level II and found out it was a girl....we're on team !!!!! I seriously screamed out loud from excitement. I really wanted a girl!!! My parents were with us and the sono tech asked my family to leave to discuss the medical portion. As soon as she asked them to leave, I knew something had to be wrong. I whispered "is everything okay" and she said, "just a small road-bump". I freaked. She said that she found a small cyst on the brain and my numbers for trisomy 18 went from 1/10,000 to 1/1,000. Her bedside manner left much to be desired. She went through everything so matter-of-factly- it was like she was reading me a weather report. She said I'll come back in 4 weeks and we'll see if the cyst dissolves which it should. I asked her if I should have an amnio and she said, "it's a personal decision". Gee, thanks. I know that. We then saw the doctor who really calmed our fears and told us he sees this in about 1/20 pregnancies and it always resolves itself. He said that cysts are a common part of brain development and he would not be worried at all. I asked him if he would recommend an amnio and he said no. He said my AFP test were perfect and there were no other indications that there's a problem. Of course now I'm no longer on cloud 9 and am freaking a little. Has anyone heard of this before and if so, what was the outcome?

YES, this happened to me with my daughter - it is called a choroid plexus cyst - do some research and you'll learn more about it. Doctors still don't know much about it, and in most cases, like 99%, the cyst goes away on its own (as in my case - and in fact, they later determined what they saw was probably just a brain fold).

There is some VERY nebulous link with a higher risk for having a child with Trisomy, but if all your other scans look normal and there are no other physical indicators, you should be just fine.

As my ob/gyn told me at the end of all our craziness when we found this out, sometimes technology does more of a disservice than anything. He said this is probably just a normal part of brain development, but because we didn't have the technology to observe it until recently, no one ever knew.

This happened to 2 of my friends and both tims it went away on it's own. Don't worry, I'm sure it will be fine.
