Feeding a puppy

Hi I just bought from a breeder a 8 week old shih tzu puppy. She told me to feed him 1 tbsp. of dry food 3x a day. It looks like nothing is it enough? I have to call vet for a appt on Monday but figured I would ask here till then. Thank You in advance

Re: Feeding a puppy

When we got our yorkie from the breeder we fed Daisy a package of that wet dog food 3x day. I would feed the dog enough food so it doesn;t seem hungry afterwards and once you see your vet, figure out what food to put the dog on and how much and when to feed.

Re: Feeding a puppy

Thanks I guess 1 tbsp is not alot I will increase it 1/2 tbsp and see how he does. He eats so fast, I am worried he is not getting enough.

Honestly, i would give him more than 1 1/2 tbsp of dry food. He's a little dog and you have to make sure he eats. You don't want him to get hypoglycemia from not eating. I would give him a little less than 1/2 cup of dry food 3x's a day and let him eat what he wants. Thats JMO. Good luck with your new puppy!

Re: Feeding a puppy

Thank You for your advice I will try that, I feel like he is always looking to eat. I just do not want to overfeed him. I will try it with his next feeding and go from there.

Re: Feeding a puppy

I feel like that is definitely not enough for a growing puppy, but definitely ask the vet when you go for your visit.

Re: Feeding a puppy

Thank You all for your advice, I gave him a 1/3 cup last night and he was up all night. He cried alot and did his business all night in cage. I took him out alot also. So today we are trying 2 tbsp and seeing how he does. Sleep deprived from my puppy.

Re: Feeding a puppy

IMO, and I'm not a vet, 2 TBS does NOT seem like an adequate amount of food to feed a puppy. Did you set up an appointment with your vet to get the puppy checked out? They would really be your best resource as to how much food to feed.

Good luck! Chat Icon
