Do all doctors do the glucose test?

I am 24 wks and from what I read it's about this time that this test is done. Does every doctor do it? Does every patient take it?

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

yes, all OBs do it, but if i remember correctly it's usually at 28 weeks. i would strongly recommend you do it, because GD can be really dangerous for the baby...

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

At my 24 week appointment the nurse gave me the drink and told me to set up the test for 26 weeks. I did the 1 hour at 26 weeks then the 3 hour last week at 28 weeks.

I just checked my papers - it's 16 weeks for me - she called it an 'early glucose screening'...

i'm overweight, my mom has it - my dad is borderline and EVERYONE on my mom's side has it.

oh dear GOD - i hope i'm remebering that right...if it was 12 - i'll just cry...that's next week!

i can check the timeline when I get home....or hang on - i may have it in an FM that i sent.... I DO - for me - it's at 16 weeks!

your history is stronger than mine... only one grandmother had it, NO one else. I am overweight though, which i think would take precedence over family history.

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

I think it is a standard PG test now. At my 26 week appt., my DR. gave me a script to have it done before my 28 week appt.

Being overweight before getting PG doesn't mean you'll have GD, I have been overweight my entire life and according to my DR I passed the 1 hour test "with flying colors"

right (and because of my weight too) - and with my regular physician - i have been tested EVERY year for my blood sugar levels - to make sure we catch it early enough. I know it's just a matter of time for me...so i KNOW i'll have GD....in the VERY least...

I don't think it's too early, your DR is probably just doing it as a precaution. One of my friends went in her PG overweight and her DR suggested she get tested twice, once early on and the second time at 28 weeks. She never developed GD, but he wanted to catch it early if it was going to be an issue.

No problem Chat Icon I'm glad I could make you feel better. I was nervous too because my father developed Type II diabetes later in life, so I thought I may have a predisposition to it. But I figured even if I do end up with GD, it isn't the end of the world, I'd learn to live with it Chat Icon

Good Luck at your test!

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

I did it 3x total.

I did the one hour early in my pregnancy due to strong family history of diabetes.

Failed the one hour

Passed the three hour

Took it again at 28 weeks as a precaution and passed it.

I wanted to skip this test but apparently it is very important.

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

I am having my mine done at my next OB appt which I wil be just over 24 weeks. I have a family history of it too (my dad & sister both have diabetes) but I was not checked early for DS nor this time either.

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

Generally it is done between 25-29 weeks or so. It is considered malpractice for a doctor not to administer this test and they can discharge you as a patient if you try to not take it.

I have NO idea why you'd skip this test. I had hyperemsis when I was pregnant, hadn't even gained 1lb by the time I had to take it and I took it and guess what, I failed the 1 hr! I did pass the 3 hour, but what if I hadn't. Undiagnosed GD can lead to a plethora of problems for your child!

Re: Do all doctors do the glucose test?

To the best of my knowledge, all OBs do this test--if you're worried about how awful it's going to be, trust me...it's a piece of cake!! Chat Icon
