Do you mix up their food??

Do you feed your dog/cat basically the same thing every day? Do you alternate between foods? etc...

Bella only eats organic dry food, which she loves so I basically keep it simple and stick with that. Someone was telling me the other day, it's good to rotate between the type of food, sometimes giving them canned and also dry with sometimes chicken & then fish. . Chat Icon

Re: Do you mix up their food??

Our horses get the same thing every day. It's very important that horses don't have sudden changes in feed. Once a week, though, they do get bran mashes.

Our kitties also eat the same thing every day.

The only thing that changes for our animals is what treat(s) and how many. Chat Icon

Same thing every day (dry food). Once in a blue moon I will give wet food, b/c one kitty loves it.

They beg for it twice a day, so they must love it! Chat Icon

Re: Do you mix up their food??

Definitely not. If we make a conscious decision to change foods, we do it gradually, where we mix both foods over 3-5 day's time.

The first time we switched food too quickly, we had poop issues. The second time, we did it right and had no problems.

Right now, we're on a pretty good food so we're staying with it.

edited to add:

We will add things to his food like pumpkin puree, plain yogurt, fish oil pills, vitamin E, canola oil... But not change the "base" dry food altogether.

Re: Do you mix up their food??

Same every day. It can upset a pet's system to have different foods too often. If I mix up anything it is with treats.

Also, I would not recommend canned foods. Talk to your vet about it.Chat Icon

I thought is was hard on their stomachs to mix it up?
Lola gets dry food every day - It's also good for her teeth and she doesn't have stinky dog breath Chat Icon

She also gets 'cookies' (treats)
And..............of course a taste of whatever we might be eating.

The end of the Italian Bread is her favorite - Are you sure Yorkies aren't Italian??

Same here. Once in a while we mix in a little wet food as a special treat. But other than that she gets the same food everyday.

Re: Do you mix up their food??

We feed Teemu Dry food with a little water and Wet Food mixed it. We always use the same Brand of Wet Food, but we do mix up the flavors. It is all organic Merrick. He hasn't had any poop issues from the different wet foods, probably since they are the same manufacturer and the dry stays the same. He seems to like the change though, as once I had three cans of the Brauts N Tots left, and he was not as thrilled to eat his food by the time I got to the end of the third can!

Re: Do you mix up their food??

no switching. Ali gets the same dry food all the time--we have switched brands a few times and now she's on a healthier, more natural food, and senior food as well. She likes it and has been eating really well Chat Icon

Char, like Bella, also only eats Organic dry food but there are different flavors/brands of Organic that are suitable for her - Sometimes, I'll switch it up or rotate one kind, one month and another kind another month to keep it interesting.

Our Vet really recommends us not giving her wet food. I don't know if he feels this way with all dogs or just Char because Miniature Schnauzers are known for having sensitive stomachs. I will put a little bit of hot water in the dry food to make it a bit softer for her. Sometimes, I'll boil some Organic chicken and just put a few bits in there, other times a piece of Organic American cheese - sliced up in pieces. She gets Organic baby carrots as treats a lot and sometimes I'll slice them in her food... Same thing w/ Organic apples.

That's about it - hope that helps!
