How soon is too soon.........
to start sending out resumes for a new job? I am due 12/30 and my employer has been hinting around a lot lately about lay-offs. We also had a meeting today and we are NOT getting our bonus and they talked about "overspending" on staff, not bringing in a lot of new business, etc.
My plan anyways would be to go on maternity leave, take my FMLA and just kind of "wait things out" but I still feel like I should be proactive about this.
I just don't think I'd look desirable to potential employers ;).
I am looking for something in social work/health care btw.

Are you looking for something before the baby comes or after you are done with maternity leave?

I would wait until after the baby is born, you're not going to be able to go on interviews now anyway.

Re: How soon is too soon.........
i don't think it hurts to look around - some positions especially my have a start date set for quite a bit from now. seriously looking though, i'd probably wait a bit. how long would you take off if you could go back to the same job? i'd say take your 6 weeks and then go out looking. you want to make sure you can go out on interviews, etc.
still look around though. if you find your "dream job" i'd apply right away.

Re: How soon is too soon.........
I'm in the same predicament as you. My employer is definitely laying off more people and I would be looking now if I wasn't delivering in 3.5 weeks!
My advice would be, unless you really need the money from a new job, just continue with the current employer and file for disability while you're on leave.
In NJ, you can get at least 10 weeks of pay at about $500 per week. NY may have something similar?
If you are paid for disability, make the most of it and take as much time as you're allowed. I doulbt your employer can lay you off while you're on leave or they may just get in legal trouble.
Good luck!
