Why is my puppy doing this?
I've had Presley for 3 weeks now. He's had three accidents in three weeks; until yesterday. He ran into the spare bedroom where I couldn't see him and peed on the carpet. Today he ran in there and pooped! He had just been outside 1/2 hr earlier and made no attempt to go out again.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

He's 6 months but we adopted him three weeks ago.
We don't let him in the bedrooms because they are carpeted. DH left the door open yesterday and now today and that's when he snuck in and did his business.

Re: Why is my puppy doing this?
What are you using to clean the carpet after he goes? You want to make sure it's something that gets the scent out. Even of he just poops. I find Nature's Miracle works the best. If he smells his pee or poo in a room, he'll think that's where he is supposed to go and keep going there.
When you take him out, try to take him to the same area each time. If he doesn't go and it's been awhile since he went, take him out again a half hour later. When he goes outside give him lots of praise. You could even give him a small treat when he goes outside. Just make sure you give him the treat or praise immediately after he goes. If it's not within a few seconds, he won't associate it with going. I actually, still tell Bella "good girl" as she starts to pee.
Good luck, he'll get the hang of it!

When he has an accident, make sure you spray the are with an enzyme solution like Nature's Miracle. It deters them from going in the same spot. If their "scent" remains, they will "go" in the same area over and over.
It takes time, patience, and persistence. Don't give up - Presley will get it!

Re: Why is my puppy doing this?
Thank you everyone. I have the enzyme solution that I use after I used the spot cleaner I got at Petco. Not sure what it is about that room that he's gone in there twice in two days.
I probably should have taken him out again when I saw he only peed outside. Poor Presley doesn't know to go to the door, bark etc to let me know he needs to go out.

I found that my dog was doing this at first also. My father suggested taking him for a walk once a day. It worked!! Over time with the walks he has no more accidents. They say somtimes its a sign of them needing more exercise.

He has completely lost his mind today. I realized after I caught him pooping in the bedroom that he also peed on the area rug by the front door. Now, DH came in and he ran out of the house. He normally stays on the lawn. Nope, tonight he thought it's a good idea to run into the street.
He goes for walks and runs around the yard. Today he didn't though so maybe that's his issue.

Re: Why is my puppy doing this?
Have you tried crating? I did this with my puppy up until she was about 1 and it has worked 100%. Also, keep the space you allow the dog to room free limited and do not give him or her full use of the house until you know your dog is 100% trained.
I used to close every door in the house and only allow her to hang out in the room where we were, that way we could keep an out eye out for her.
it will get better, but you just have to be consistent.
