Dealing with GD

Last week I found out that I failed my 3 hr glucose test and that I have GD. Since then, I've been trying very hard to watch my sugar & carbs in take. Those who have GD, how are you handling trying to curb your sweet tooth? I'm craving chocolate and sweets and not eating it is making me crazy. Yesterday I couldn't concentrate on work, it felt like I had ADD. I haven't gone back to see the maternal fetal specialist yet, my appt is 11/14, so I'm cutting the sugar and carbs on my own. It feels like I'm going through withdrawl.

Re: Dealing with GD

1. remind yourself you are doing this for baby

2. get rid of everything "bad" in your house and ask DH not to eat things that are off limits around you

3. remind yourself it's only temporary

Re: Dealing with GD

ITA with the previous poster. Try to stop focusing on it. Don't think about what you can't eat. In the end, it's such a minor inconvenience & for such a short time. Try to focus on how lucky you are that we have the technology to detect this condition early on and help the baby. If all else fails, think about how nice it will be to be eating healthier than you ever have in your life (seriously, the diet they put you on is really really good for you & the baby) & it'll help to keep your weight down! I go for my repeat 1-hour (passed the first one at 16 weeks) tomorrow. I was insulin-dependent with my first pregnancy. You can do it!! Chat Icon

Re: Dealing with GD

With GD, you don't have to cut out carbs completely. You have to limit them. Will you be going to a nutritionist? My OB sent me to one right away and I got a meal plan. Once I had my sugar under control, I was able to play around a little and figure out what "sweets" worked for me. Every night for a snack, I ate a 100cal pack of Lorna Doones or No sugar added slow churned chocolate icecream with peanut butter. They totally satisfied my cravings. It was all about portion size. They aren't real "sweets" but since I was eating so little sugar, they definitely did the job.
