Level II

I hear you ladies talk about it a lot. When do you get it done and what do they do?

Re: Level II

It's done around 20 weeks. And just an FYI, not all drs call it a Level II (mine didn't so I was confused at first). It's an basically just an anatomy scan. They do a thorough sonogram of the baby and take pics of each body parts so they can make sure everything looks ok and seems to be developing normally. Depending on how well the baby cooperates, (if he's moving around too much/not enough so they can get all the shots they need) it could take an 1/2 hour, it could take a lot longer.

For example, my first, yes first, Level II lasted an hour, but he was hunched over in the fetal position so they couldn't get the front view of his heart. So I had to go back a second time last week to try and get another shot of the heart. Still wasn't flipped over. I go back again tomorrow morning and hopefully he's flipped over. He's apparently stubborn like his mommy. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Level II

Generally at 20 weeks is when you have your Level II it's also known as an anatomy scan. It's a fairly long sono (mine was about an hour), where they take many measurements of the baby. They look at the brain, heart, measure the femur bone, look at the bloodflow, etc..... They are making sure the baby is growing on schedule.

I had to have mine done at 18 weeks, due to my AFP bloodwork, but because it was early, they had to have me come back at 20 weeks for another sono so they could get the measurements on the heart they needed.

Awe... the baby's active!! Thanks sooo much! I never heard of it b4 this board and not sure if that's what my Doc calls it or not. Figured I'd ask. I won't be getting that done for another 11 weeks. Chat Icon

Re: Level II

I had mine done at 19 weeks. basically it is a full anatomy scan. they do a sonogram and look at EVERYTHING to make sure it has formed properly. The sonogram corresponds to your level II blood work. The blood work is done a week or 2 before.

That is also when you can find out the sex of your little one.

My baby is very active so it took a bit longer, he kicks a LOT.

Re: Level II

As my DH says, "It's when we find out if it's a lemon or a lime" ........

My Dr. didn't call it a level II, he played along w/ my DH and called it the Pink or Blue test .........Chat Icon

But as the others said, they do a full scan of the baby to be sure everything is going as planned -
