New Puppy, my pug...UPDATE

I got a new puppy on Saturday, Rufio. He is an all black pug.

Two days later he's got these bumps that look like scabs on the tops of his ears and the hair is falling out.

He's on these pills for heartworm (?) he has to take 1/4 of one once a day and 1/2 of one 2 times a day.

Since I've brought him home his poops have gone from normal squishy puppy poop to 100% liquid.

I have him on Eukanuba small breed puppy food. He gets a cup a day. He drinks alot of water and is constantly peeing (which is normal with the ratio of water to pee lol)

What is with his ears? And how in the heck can I get the poor guys poops back to normal? There are so many factors I don't know if it's the food or the pills or what.

I have an apt to go to the vet at the end of this month (for his 4 month check up) but I'm moving that up so she can take a look at his ears.

Any suggestions?

UPDATE: Thanks for everyones suggestions. Well the first week is over and his stool is normal :) I gave him some rice (minimal) in his food but I think it was more nerves. Also the stuff on his ears went away. Rufio got his first tubbie on sunday (hated it lol) he still has his vet apt though so don't worry. A full check up is on its way shortly. Seems to have just been a stressful first week. Hes realized he's "home" now Chat Icon

aw, he's really cute. I think you should call the vet and tell him/her about the loose stools just to find out if it's a side effect of the pills. S/he'll probably want to see your dog. You also will probably have to change the dog's diet just until the stool's go back to normal. Ollie had diarrhea for about 3 weeks and she was eating boiled chicken and rice until it went back to normal and then we had to change her regular puppy food to a sensitive stomach food. It's a really good idea to call your vet and see what they recommend.

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

I absolutely love him.....he's adorable...

Please call the vet. I am concerned about his stools and dehydration. Also he may have an allergic reaction to something.

Your puppy is so cuteChat Icon I agree with the other posters. Please see your vet sooner. The loose stool is concerning. It could be any number of things, as you said. Your puppy may have giardia or any number or health issues that are common in puppies but need medication to cure. Good luck and please keep us postedChat Icon

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

If it were your child, you would bring him to the pediatrician.

Your puppy should get the same concern. Please bring him to the vet.

In the meantime I would feed him rice to curb the loose stools.

He is adorable!!

OMG what a cutie and that face. Chat Icon

I would definitely move his appt up ASAP. Loose stools can be an issue. For now feed him chicken and rice to help his stools. Keep us updated!

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

First off congrats!! So cute!! Love that face!! Second call your vet. we had Otis (Pug) on Innova dog food since he was a pup and he loves it. Pugs in general are very senstive to alot of things. You also do not want the hair loss to be a form a mange or anything like that.

Where did you get the puggie from?

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

I've moved up his vet apt :) I also put some rice in his food and his stool is normal again.

He is such a good little puppy!!! The first few days were hard but the last few of this week have been so much fun with him! I think he realizes now that he's home......and that he is going to be the most spoiled dog ever! Chat Icon

Thank you for all your help ladies!! And if anyone out there has a pug FM me, let's be friends :) Chat Icon

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

I know someone who had this, and she has a pug too. Turns out he was allergic to the food. She feeds him a special food, it is all natural, and you can get it at Petsmart. Also, I would take him to he vet to rule out anythng. I know they can get very nervous when they first go to a new home. I hope your new puppy feels better soon.

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

Pugs are prone to skin issues, so it is best to find a vet who is familiar with them. Also, they are more likely to have issues such as demodetic mange if they were not bred using strict bloodline standards. Definitely ask the vet to do a skin test in addition to any other testing that the may perform. The two symptoms may or may not be linked.

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

I'm really glad he's feeling better! Chat Icon

I've been reading about skin allergies myself lately and identifying them is a PITA. I don't know if you're feeding him treats of any kind, but they say to narrow down the allergy by only feeding dog food. Were they feeding him the same food at the place you got him from?

Also, I'm going to be gradually switching to a "minimal ingredient" formula soon by Natural Balance to see if it helps with the scratching. He may have bald spots on his ears from scratching them - is it possible he has ear mites? Our dog's bald spots are gone three weeks after being treated for mites.

Rufio is quite adorable, good luck at the vet! Chicken and rice is good - and natural pumpkin puree is also a yummy treat to mix with his food. Chat Icon

Re: New Puppy, my pug...

We had liquid poop the first week home. Brought a stool sample to the vet which was normal.

Vet said it could be loose stools from a stress reaction to the change of taking him away from his littermates and taking him home.
