Dog owners - would this bother you?

There is a guy in our neighborhood who walks his 2 weiner-dogs every day. Fine. They're adorable. However, he stops every single day in front of our house and just stares at Lilly in the window. She goes NUTS when those 2 dogs are out there - scratching at the window, barking, jumping - I'm afraid she's going to fall off the ledge one of these days. The window in our living room is basically floor-to-ceiling. They guy stands there for about 2-3 minutes while Lilly goes crazy inside the house.

I'm thinking of maybe asking him politely to not stop in front of our house because he's basically tormenting my dog. She gets so worked up Chat Icon It's not like his dogs are even going to the bathroom - he just stops right in front of the house every day.

What to do? Is it even worth saying anything?

Yes it would definately bother the cr@p out of me.. I know this happens to me when I walk LOLA.. i walk past a house with 3 poms and 2 big other dogs... Its my route so i really cant change it.. (there will just be another dog somewhere else) But i walk by as fast as i can so they dont get hurt.. I see them going crazy and I feel terrible.. Lola just ignores them and knows we have to walk.. I think this guy is strange? Why would he stop ther like that?? Maybe the next time just go out side and say "can I help you or is everything ok"? My dog is going nuts Im afraid she is going to go through the window!! Thats not a bad approach!!

I think he thinks it's cute that she's barking and whining because of his dogs. His dogs don't even look at my house - it's just him that stands there with a stupid smile on his face while Lilly goes crazy.

Do you have curtains or something you could close? I would prob go over to the window when I heard Lilly barking, give the guy a look, and close the curtains. I'd prob do that a few times to see if he got the hint before I said anything.

We have sheers and I've gone over to them and stood in the window - he's actually waved at me. Chat Icon (there are other curtains too, but it's a process to close them Chat Icon )

Re: Dog owners - would this bother you?

I actually do that with Brinkley - but not for 2-3 minutes.

I do it when he's afraid of the dog that's barking. I stand with him, calm, and make him stay in a situation that he might normally run from. So he understands that it's ok, he's not in danger, and his Mommy is calm. Chat Icon

Not the same situation as this guy, obviously. If I was you, I would probably walk out to him smiling and have a chat with him about his dogs. Ask their names, all that. Say something like - I wish my Lilly could be this calm around your dogs, she's scratching up my wood frames right now - would it be possible to limit the time you spend in front of my house to help me out?

Re: Dog owners - would this bother you?

see, i am always looking at dogs in windows and thinking how cute they are BUT i would NEVER stand there if they started to get worked up or go crazy - if anything, that would make me leave right away as to not work up the dog. there is a mini schnauzer who lives near my mom's house and everytime i pass by i slow the car down and look at him laying in the window - he doesn't even flinch or move lol he is too busy enjoying himself. however, if that dog were to then go NUTS i would never stop or slow down again.

why this guy DOES stop is beyond me -- i don't know what i'd do. i guess i would have to take the dog out to say hi to the other dogs and mention that it is so nice of him to "admire" lilly but that it does tend to make her very hyped up... and just kind of give that hint -- IDK, good luck Chat Icon

I would probably just turn the sprinklers on. How's that for the voice of reason? Chat Icon

Re: Dog owners - would this bother you?

I think the next time it happens you do need to go out and strike up a chat with him and mention that it really upsets your dog. It is rude of him if it is making your dog crazy and he's is doing it on purpose. If he's not doing it on purpose, he should be made aware that it is not "cute" so he can stop it. Your dog could get hurt and no mater what it is stressing her out.

OMG Chat Icon Chat Icon I'm a very impulsive person and this is something I would definitely do. Or I would bring my dog out and let her work his dogs up into a frenzy so he can deal with what he's been doing to me. But I'm spiteful. Chat Icon

That would totally annoy me. I'd politely ask him to stop if the staring him down from the window isn't working.

I had a neighbor who used to do this to my Shiba Inu Loki. He would torment him through the window and he thought it was hilariousChat Icon Well one day he was outside when I had to take Loki in the car somewhere and Loki went nuts and managed to get out of his travel harness and jumped across my face. I smashed my truck into a poleChat Icon

So yes, I would say something.
