Re: Is wearing a pocketbook with a long strap across your chest totally "out"?
Yep, it seems that "pocketbook" is a NY area term. I remember saying that word to someone when I was out of state and I got such a look. I think it's find to say "pocketbook," but I hate when people sloppily say "pock-a-book," KWIM?

I'm originally from CT and everyone in my family calls it a "pock-a-book".

for the original post....I see alot of people wearing the long straps across the chest. I dont because it makes my boobs look weird. Also alot of diaperbags are messenger style so you do what you feel is comfy.
BTW - I call it a pocketbook too!

I say pock-a-book. LOL. I sometimes say bag, it depends on who I am talking to and what English they speak.
If anyone, like me, is thinking, why the f is it called a pocketbook, well the etymology of the word actually makes sense.
Pocket comes from a word meaning bag or more specifically "small bag worn on the person, especially one sewn into a garment" from c.1430. Therefore a pocket-book is a small bag for carrying books and papers.
Good source for etymology if you like that sort of thing like me.
