Cord Blood
Just wanted to get this out there, because I know its a hot topic. I just read in a magazine, that if you are not collecting your child's cord blood, you can have it collected and donated. I don't think there is a cost for this, but I am not positive. Just thought I would pass this along.

A public cord blood bank would be used. Click Here for Info

this is what I've heard too. I also heard sometimes they'll only collect it during certain times of day becuase of courrier issues.
I didn't research the topic thoroughly, though, so hopefully some major hospitals DO collect donations... it seems very backwards to me that they would just toss such a valuable resource!

Re: Cord Blood
When I delivered DS at South Nassau in April, we did a public donation. Neither the hospital nor the OB mentioned this option, but we did the research on our own and found a bank that would work with us and the hospital. (It was new to the OB as well, and he helped us with the paperwork.) Within two hours of delivery, DH called the courier and they gave us instructions from there.
Cryobanks International
They do private donations as well, but the public donation is free.

Re: Cord Blood
Wow--I can't believe hospitals don't do it....we banked through viacord, but for people that don't choose that option, it would be FABULOUS for the country to have a huge bank of cord blood. That's amazing that they dont do it

Re: Cord Blood
A lot of the hospitals in NYC do though. It's probably only a matter of time for Long Island to catch up.
