Skiing - NY/Vermont areas

The kids have such a long Christmas break this year so I was thinking that we should go skiing/snowtubing somewhere.

I used to ski pretty well pre-marriage, kids, etc. but the rest of the family has never been. Does anyone have any recommendations where we can go (driving distance from LI) that has somewhere nice we can stay (condo or resort) and lots of stuff for the kids to do?

Re: Skiing - NY/Vermont areas

I think most ski resorts have lots of lodging options, although at that time of year they may be $$ or hard to get. Anyway, there are TONS of places to choose from. In VT Killington is great, but really big. Okemo and Mount Snow are nice and in southern VT so it's a shorter drive. In NH I love Loon Mtn., but it's a longer drive. They have a bunch of timeshares in that area that you could look into renting out. In NY we used to go to Gore Mtn. on HS ski trips. It was nice, but I have no idea about the lodging around there. I would just start checking out some places and see if you can get a package deal somewhere. Or check out VRBO.com and see if you can find a house or condo rental on there. It may be easier to start by figuring out who has the best lodging deals!!

Hunter Mtn in NY and Mt Snow in VT are short drives. The only thing is that since Christmas has been relatively warm the past few years, you are not guaranteed to have good weather for skiing. I would probably go a bit farther. DH and I love Whiteface in Lake Placid. Great mountain and cute town! I would look on Craigslist and rent a house for the week/weekend.

If you go further upstate (Syracuse area) there is Greek Peek and Toggenburg which are very family friendly. PA also has some nice ski areas like Shawnee, Jack Frost/Big Boulder and Camelback

I would do this too. we rented a cabin with friends for the weekend in New Hamshire and drove to Stratton VT (about 40 mins away) to ski.

I am also a BIG fan of Stowe...a long drive but GREAT skiing and such a cute town. Chat Icon

in the Catskills there's Belleyeare mountain (which I will become VERY familiar with I hope in years to come) and a few others.

I generally prefer to keep away from moutains close by (like Hunter and Killington- too big and TOOO crowded)

Have a great time!

The Poconos is a short drive and good mountains for beginner skiiers. There are also usually LOTS of options for renting houses. You should look in vrbo.com or vacationretals.com. We've rented from both.
