Any Jewish Preganant women

I have a question... My brother-in-law's unveiling is next week. I was asked to come to it for the family and I also haven't told anyone I'm prego yet b/c it's still early. What should I do?

not sure exactly what you are asking, but if it's your BIL, then I would go.

Re: Any Jewish Preganant women

thats tough...my DH just went to visit his grandparents grave the other day, its been two years sine his grandfather passed away, and he and MIL were adament that I do not step foot in the cemetry, they even came back to the house and washed their hands with the hose outside the house, not bring "anything" in...honestly, I'm not insanely superstitious, but I don't know if I would, on the other hand it is your BIL, can you tell family sooner and maybe they'll understand?

Re: Any Jewish Preganant women

There is no Jewish law that prohibits a pregnant jewish woman to be in a cemetary. It's only superstition.

Like I said, if it were my BIL, I'd be there.

Re: Any Jewish Preganant women

so is it a superstitious thing? Or do other people not want a prego there?

I mean, I cannot see not going to my FIL's unveiling...

Also, a good friend of ours' father passed away recently-- and his wife was pregnant and she was at the funeral.

I mean, if it's someone close, it's a little ridiculous to not go to a funeral or an unveiling because of a superstition.

I agree, I think I'm going to go. My sister was pregnant last year when she passed away and our rabbi said each individual is different. He was fine with it.

I think the real question is if YOU have a problem with it... It seems like it's your choice-- as others are not affected by it.

If it were me, I wouldn't even think twice about it.

You're right... I just felt that they should know b4 hand b/c I don't know how my family would feel about it. I'd be there for my sister and her husband.

Im jewish and went to my grandmother's burial when I was about 9 weeks, hadn't told the family yet...actually, we told them later that day after the burial, but there was no way I would have not been there.

I think it's a personal decision honestly.

Re: Any Jewish Preganant women

not jewish but just wanted to say i attended a funeral last month for a jewish coworker and the people that went with me were constantly making sure i was okay and not too grief stricken. i got the feeling they didn't want me to get too emotional being pregnant and all. that's probably where the superstition originates from...i think...Chat Icon

Re: Any Jewish Preganant women

this is touchy, and honestly i converted..so id be the wrong one to ask about any jewish "laws" but...
my mother still wouldnt allow me to my grandmothers cemetary pregnant..
BUT..listen, realistically speaking, no matter WHAT faith you are...G'd is NOT going to punish you for being there for someone you loved who has now passed..G'd would never let anything happen to your unborn babies, because you broke a law or tradition, or anything like that...
i totally understand the need to keep jewish tradition alive, so although i never (even before i converted) believed in the whole "dont bring anything for a new baby into the house until theyre born thing" i do understand it...the reason i wont "buy into it" is because my faith in my G'd is so strong that i know if anything ever did happened to my baby, it WOULD NOT be because of superstition...

i hope this doesnt come acorss rude at all, i LOVE everything about the jewish faith, my reason for conversion has nothing to do with any of this, and has actually brought me closer to Judaism than ive ever been in my life.
just wanted to explain so no one gets the wrong idea

For superstition, I would go. But do what you are comfortable with.

I feel better when I see pregnant women at a funeral. It reminds me of the circle of life.
