Is it really bad to have caffeine?

You would think I would know this since this is going to be my 3rd child, but I honestly don't.

I know caffeine is not exactly the best thing to have during a pregnancy, but why can't we have it again? I had to have Pepsi...and didn't stay away from it while PG with DD. I'm wondering if this is the reason she doesn't sleep all night and she's a year and 1 month old. Chat Icon

I believe they think there is a correlation with caffeine and mc in early pregnancy. I honestly don't know why it is/would be a problem late in your pregnancy.

Re: Is it really bad to have caffeine?

My Dr. said 2 cups a day is ok - but other Dr(s) say none at all .........

But I'm not a coffee/soda drinker anyway - so some days I have it, some I don't ...........

I personally stayed away from it my first tri, and then started having one cup of small coffee in the morning and occassionally a coke..my dr said a little is fine, even in the first, but just wanted to stay away from it at first

Every dr. will tell you different but I think I remember reading most places that under 200 mg a day is ok (which I THINK is like 2 small cups).

Re: Is it really bad to have caffeine?

if you drink a lot of it, just switch to caf-free pepsi.... this is what I did with coffee, and I didn't miss it a bit.

I know caffeine crosses the placenta, so it will affect the baby similar to us... which may not be a good thing at certain developmental phases.... especially since I believe the baby breaks down the caffeine much slower than we do... so s/he will get much more of a jolt. but I think for it to be detrimental, it requires a lot of coffee... one cup is pretty harmless.

every Dr will tell you how much they think is acceptable..... usually its something like 200-300 mg a day

Different drs may say different things, and it's very much a personal choice involving what you feel comfortable with. But a few points...
* My dr said one cup a day is fine. I am obsessed with a tea from Starbucks that has 75 mg in the small size.
* Most articles say up to 200 mg a day is safe.
* My dr actually TOLD me to try having a cup of my tea every day to deal with bad pregnancy migraines I was getting (and am still getting).

I did the same in the beginning. I switched all of my soda to caffeine free.

Re: Is it really bad to have caffeine?

I heard 300mg is the limit per day. I am not a coffee drinker either but I looove iced tea. How many mg in Iced tea...does anyone know? One or two small cups won't hurt the baby.

This is me, too. We live in the south, so sweet tea is a must-have Chat Icon

I think a little caffeine is fine. Personally I mostly drink water during the week and then on the weekend will have one or two glasses of iced tea or coke.

Actually when I complained about headaches to my doctor she actually recommended I drink caffeine.

1 CAF. beverage a day shouldn't be the end of the world. (1 cup of coffee or 1 can of soda, etc)

Re: Is it really bad to have caffeine?

hahhahahaaaa.... i had at least one cup of coffee EVERY DAY OF MY PREGNANCY just about!

i hardly ever slept too well.... so the coffee was justification for me, and my doctor was OK with it just as long as i didn't do starbucks.

Just curious...why would your doctor say no starbucks? Their coffee (even though it may be alittle stronger) still has less than the amount of caffeine a doctor allows. I only ask because I have a mocha frappacino about 3xs a week.

Their coffee beans actually dish out more caffeine than norm coffee.... U have to keep in mind that their frappacino's and such are made w/ESPRESSO.... NOT REGULAR COFFEE!!!!!
