day 3 vs day 5 transfer
i know that one is on day 3 of your cycle and one on day 5. is one 'better' or has more successful rates? why do they do the transfer on different days like this.

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
Every doctor has a different approach. My last IVF cycle I was suppose to have a 3 day transfer - turned out I had so many excellent looking embryos on day 3 that they pushed me to day 5 so they could distinguish the best embryos from the so-so embryos.

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
Well it's actually on day 3 or 5 AFTER your egg retieval (not your cycle ). There are a TON of different opinions on this subject and some doctors feel the embryos have a better shot growing in the uterus so they put them in earlier (day 3), other doctors like to let them grow to see which are the strongest (day 5). Also, if you don't have a lot of embryos left at day 3 a lot of the time they will just transfer them then so they don't risk them arresting before they get implanted. I'm not sure about the succes rates of one vs. the other. I had a day 5 transfer and it worked for me, but plently of people have had day 3 work just as well!!

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
so its pretty much whether the doc likes to watch them grow in or put them inside of you to grow. i get it, thank you.
do they grade them on 1, 2, 3 and 4? when do you find out (or how many days after retrieval) do u find out what grade your eggs are?

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
Here's what I have learned and been told by RE after my failed IVF cycle...I had a three day transfer because of the amount of eggs I had (4) we put back three and put the fourth back in the dish. BFN and the one they put back in the dish didnt make it to day five.
My RE feels that the likelyhood is that if they dont make it in the dish they wont make it inside either. He also feels that most REs put them back at day 3 if there arent a lot of eggs because none might make it to day five and then there is nothing to transfer and the cycle is basically a bust.
Personally, I was devestated with my BFN. I told my RE that I honestly would rather have my whole cycle cancelled than have to go though the torture of the 2ww with embies that would have all not made it to day five.
My RE did not necessarilly disagree with me. So this cycle I am pushing for a 5 day transfer. But that's just me.

wont they be able to tell what grade they are or how they will survive prior to placing them back inside you? oh no. now something else yet to stress about!

Yes, my embies were graded before they were put in....I had 2 7 celled grade "A" and a 6 celled grade "B". Still BFN. Which was my point to my RE. I would rather have waited until day 5 instead of waiting for 2 weeks for embroys to implant that may not have even made it to day 5

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
Cornell only performs 5 day transfers if you have 10 or more fertilized embies....they are very strict about that.....their rate is about 15% all transfers being performed on day 5 vs. 85% on day 3.....
Also, Cornell doesn't give you the grade on the day of the transfer...only the cell number and maybe fragmentation....you need to call your doctor after and ask for the full report....(you will get a picture of the little ones but only showing the cell number)...
Wanted to add that they pick the best ones for transfer so don't worry about the quality plus there is no way to tell which one will implant...I know somone who is pregnant with twins and her embies were 4 cells and 6....and then you see many BFN with a 5 day transfer so it is pure science.....FYI, mine was 9 cell on day 3....
HTH!

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
thank you anita. its just so confusing. so cornell puts all their patients on a day 3 transfer then based on how many embies you have, hey can move you?
dr. g wants us transferring 2 embies. when i leave the transfer i will have a pic of them? are they good about letting you know how good your embies were once they were fertilized?
how does the freezing work?

I had basically the same situation-none made it to day 5 however we transferred 2 on Day 3 (one 7 cell and one 9 cell with minimal fragmentation) and are 23 wks pregnant with twins-I really think it depends on your individual circumstance. I was a self pay about to move out of the area so I think they did what they thought was right for me, which is what I loved about my clinic and Dr.
If you have high fsh I would probably push for a day 3 tranfer-hopefully no good Dr would let a cycle go to waste if they see signs at Day 3 that embies won't make it to Day 5.

Re: day 3 vs day 5 transfer
Hello -
We are thinking of doing ivf with pre genetic screening (pgs). With this they have to do a 5 day transfer to test first. best of luck!
