MIL from hell! Need advice (long, sorry)
OK, a little background. My DH doesn't exactly get along with his family. To be honest, they completely ignore us. Occasionally my MIL will ask to take DD (she's 12) places, or I will make arrangement with my SIL to play with her cousins. My DH doesn't not speak to any of his siblings, nor do they speak to him. My MIL has yet to congratulate me on being PG. I am 31 weeks. 2 weeks ago she came to my house to pick up DD and completely ignored both me and DH as if we didn't live there.
OK, so the problem is, I told DH that it was the right thing to do to invite his family members to my baby shower, simply because they are family, and because DD loves to see them. I do not know when my shower is, but I do know that my 3 S'sIL all responded "NO" to the shower. Apparantly his 2 sisters sent my sister nasty emails. At least his SIL had some tact, and just sent a simple no. However, my MIL never responded at all. Today MIL called DD on her cell and asked to speak to DH. She told him that she lost the invitation, but she wanted to attend the shower.
My question is how am I supposed to act towards her? Should I be so nice to her that it makes her sick, or should I ignore her like she does to me?

As difficult as it will be, I would say to be polite to her, thank her for coming, tell her you're happy she is there etc. You'll be busy running around talking to other guests so you won't have to devote too much time to her. Hopefully she wants a fresh start and will use your shower as that opportunity!

Say hello to her...and enjoy the party. There will be many other people there, so you can "ignore" her by talking with everyone else. Oh...I'll make sure she gets a crappy seat

I agree! It's difficult to have family situations like that, and it would be better for your kids to have a less complicated situation with their other grandma... If she is possibly sending an olive branch that would be good!

My advice, and this is just my opinion.... Is to be the really big person here, and treat her with warmth and graciousness.
Family is important. There appears to be a rough background, but this is your children's grandmother, and they should not be deprived of a special relationship with her. Its up to you, as the Mom to foster that.
This is just my opinion.

Thanks ladies. I'm sure I can be civil, which is more than she has done. I do not want to stoop to her level, and I can't help but do the right thing especially in front of DD. What kind of example would that be anyway. I will be the bigger person, which was my plan in the first place. Thanks again.
