So its looks like we're getting a puppy...

We're going tommorow to fill out the application and meet the puppy and if we want her we can take her home on Monday. She'a 10 week old terrier mix mixed with a lab mix (a total mutt). But adorable.


What do we need- so far I can think of a crate, a leash, food and food and water dishes, a collar, some chew toys.

I've never had a dog and my DH hasnt had one an adult. What else do we need? Is there a "best" brand of dog food (I'm a dietitian and I don't each junk so I don't want to feed it to my puppy). I'm so excited and overwhelmed!

as for toys, def get a puppy kong. I think most pet stores have them. It great for teething. We used it for our pup. We put either little treats or dry food in it with a little peanut butter and put it in the freezer for a couple of hrs. It helped with his teething bc it was cold and kept him nice and busy!

For food, maybe ask what he's eating at the place you are getting him from. Being taken to a new home is stressful for a puppy so we fed ours the same food from the shelter so it wasn't anything else upsetting his stomach.

maybe a bed, brush, wee wee pads (some people don't use them--i did though), a mat for under the food/water bowls, vitamins
..........charge your camera so u can take lots of pics!!!........i feed my pup eukanuba puppy lamb & rice--that is what the breeder had him on so we continued w/that.........if i think of anything else, i'll post---good luck they are soooo much fun ( a lot of work ) but the joy u get from them can't be beat!!!

To Start:

Crate
Bed for inside crate
Food bowl
Water bowl
Collar and Leash
Training treats (they have small ones that are good for housebreaking)
Food (you might want to ask what they are feeding him already, so youc an keep feeding him that so his belly doesn't get upset. You can always change/upgrade once he is settled in)
Toys!

We bought the wee wee pads, but Teemu never used them. Also we got some pet gates so we could block off the stairs when he was still young.

You will also need at some point:
Teeth cleaning kit
Nail trimmers (start now - or he won't let you do it later on!)
Pooper scooper!

I would get a blanket or some stuff toy. When i first got my dog she loved to cuddle with it. You said leash but she'll also need a collar. My dog eats science diet food...for now you will have to feed her what she currently eats as to not upset her stomach but if you want to switch i would get a recommendation from the vet. Then you can slowly wean her off her current food.

Also be sure to make a vet appointment of your own. It's better to hear how she is from your own vet. This way you can find out about shots and anything else she may need!
