When people offer to lend/give you baby stuff...
do you feel comfortable accepting? DH's friend is offering us a crib. We'll probably accept it and we'll buy a new mattress for it. We turned down a carseat, though.
I work in a nursery school, and am getting lots of generous offers of baby stuff. Not sure how comfortable I feel about it. Partly because it is a work situation and I don't want to look like I'm playing favorites. And also because, there are some things that I'd prefer to get new.
What would you do?

I would just say "Thank you so much for the offer. If I still need XXX after my shower, I will let you know." or something like that.

just to give you something else to think about if someone is just lending something like a crib.
We had lots of friends offer to let us borrow their cribs...thank goodness we didnt take them up on their offers because most of them ended up preggo again and needing their cribs!!!

They just got #3 out of the crib and think they are done, but hey, you never know!
I guess, there are some things I'm uncomfortable about getting used, whereas others seem ok. KWIM?

I have no issues with accepting things if I need it. If I don;t need it or want it I'll just say I'm ok with that or whatever... XOXOXO BOTB

So funny you posted this b/c I was just thinking about this yesterday. A co-worker told me not to buy a crib b/c I could have hers. Then she said not to buy a PNP b/c I could have hers. I told her I had my heart set on a particular crib, that we have a very small nursery blah, blah, blah. She just wouldn't take no for an answer. I figure if she drives to my apt. and drops off her crib, I'll deal with it then.

As a BTDT, I say if someone wants to give you something, or lend you something, go ahead, take advantage of it. I live in a small house and I bought an exersaucer, since my son outgrew it 18 months ago, I have passed it onto 3 girlfriends...they saved money, and I didn't have to store it in my house!!!

I have no problem taking hand me downs, I came home yesterday with a giant bag of clothes. I will also take the PNP from my co-worker. I just have a really tiny nursery, so certain cribs won't work for me.

If I know who it is coming from and I know how they take care of their things, then I will take them.

Re: When people offer to lend/give you baby stuff...
If people offer me clothes, I will probably just say thank you, and sort through them,. I won't take anything else. This is our first baby, and I really want all new stuff. I will probably just say thanks for the offer, but we already bought stroller, car seat etc...

Re: When people offer to lend/give you baby stuff...
the only major item not given to us at the shower was the playard.... we need one desperately for my mom's house, since she offered to babysit Scone when I return to work.
Simultaneously, SIL offered to give us a graco pack-n-play that literally was used ONCE. it was given to her by a friend who never used it, and she used it once but already had one and decided 2 is too much. It very well may suit all of our needs... saving us $160!!!!
simultaneously, I'd be more about things like cribs and carseats, where safety issues could come into play. whatever you accept, make sure there hasn't been a safety recall....
but overall, I find hand-me-downs to be priceless budget savers!

Re: When people offer to lend/give you baby stuff...
I take everything I can get. If I can't use it, I can give it to my mom or DH's mom or babysitter to keep at their house. Otherwise, I pay it forward.
