WWYD?

I wrote last week about my principal who left a message while he was on vacation stating that he ran into some trouble with staffing for this year. (He hired me 7/12 for a k or 1st position)

Well, on that message he said he'd call me back and of course...the call never came last week. I called the school yesterday approx 6x and each time it was something else - meeting, conference, restroom, etc. Finally a lady tells me that he is working some things out and he'll call me tom'w (today). I called today and spoke to another secretary - I asked to speak to him, she said ok then asked who was callling and what it was in ref to. When I told her a position, she said, "We don't have any openings" to which I replied, "Well he hired me in July" She had the "oh really" sound in her tone and put me on hold. I wait and wait, finally the woman I spoke with yesterday gets on and says, "Please be patient. He's trying to work something out for you. Please be patient."

Patient???? I've been in limbo since he hired me. I waited patiently for him to tell me what grade I'd teach - he never confirmed a grade and now I'm left wondering if I really have a job. I stopped looking after he hired me b/c I thought this was it. Now what...I am so frustrated and this is not a sign of good communication for the future. He has yet to come to the phone - all I want is to speak w/him and have him tell me what is going on - good, bad or ugly - I just want to know.

Wow that must be so frustrating. I would show up on Thursday and go from there. (NYC right?) Maybe their budget was cut or it could be a million things. I think it is wrong that he wont take your phone calls though. Good Luck!

Thank you for your response. Won't it be weird to just show up on Thursday without speaking with him first?

I am so upset right now. I feel like I've wasted multiple opportunities and this guy has me holding on for what could be a hopeless situation.

If I were you I would go to the school and speak to him in person its totally not right how hes putting you on hold like that.

I was wondering what happened with you.
What he's doing is pretty unprofessional. He needs to talk to you directly and just be straight up with you, not send one of his secretaries to do the job.

I would be a little worried to go in as well but you were hired in July so maybe you should go there say I'm here because I was hired and I would like to know what's going on so I can set up my classroom (or not). Tell them that you can't sit home and wonder what's going on. You have every right to know step by step what's happening.

I would be furious. In fact I'm furious for you and I don't even know you. What is with these people?! They can NOT offer you a definite job and then say oh just kidding...that is completely UNETHICAL. Go over on Thursday.. definitely. Do not ask if you have a job.. ask what grade you are teaching. If you were given a definite position then you have a job. Do you have any evidence.. emails.. etc.? When I was hired.. I was actually worried about this because there wasn't any contract signed.. the only evidence I had was email contact with him and I saved everything he wrote to me.

I would either go in tomorrow or call again and demand to talk to him. Do you have anything in writing? A contract? I'm sorry you're going through this - don't worry about looking too "stalkerish," you need a job and to provide for your family, you need to get the situation cleared up!

The only things I have in writing are the ans. to the questions I asked after my demo once he hired me. He said his secretary would email me with the next steps and the email never came. When I called to find out about the email he said ,"don't worry - enjoy your summer, I'll see you on the wk of the 25th." I have voicemails from him, but that's it.

I called back at 2:30 and the same woman from earlier and yesterday when I asked to speak w/him she asked who I was and when I said my name she said, "Please be patient, he will call you tomorrow." I replied, "I have been patient, you said he'd call me and he hasn't. What happens if he doesn't call me tomorrow? Do I come in on Thursday? I need to know if I have a job." She put me on hold and came back a few mins. later and said that he has been emailing someone at the board of ed and is waiting for a reply from them, the guy hasn't gotten back to him therefore there's not much for him to tell me so I need to bear with them as he figures something out for me.



so I'm thinking...
a- he didn't have a position open when he offered me my position
b- he has to take an excessed teacher before a new hire
c-no clue.

OMG how terribly frustrating!!

This guy is a jackass. To some extent, I understand him having staffing issues (NYC is notorious for that!), but to ignore you and only communicate, vaguely, through his secretary is downright rude and unprofessional.

I hope you get a straight answer and some direct communication ASAP!!!!

i hate to sound like the bearer of bad news but if theres not even a simple email (basically in writing) that you accept a position u might not have a job....thats what happened with the job i was offered earlier this month.

the prinicipal is being shady, go in tomorrow and say i want to get an early start in setting up my room and see what they say dont feel like a fool you hae a right to know and many teachers will be in tomorrow anyways

I'm blown away at how unprofessional this is.

To be honest, do you really want to work for someone who has obvious communication problems?

Maybe this is a good indication that the school isn't right for you.

Don't get me wrong, I know that you need a job, but these would be serious red flags for me.
