Affording time off...?

I would like to take 6 months off when Chat Icon comes but I have no maternity leave at work. They will keep my job, but I get no compensation while I am off.

We have enough saved that we could have me out of work for 2 months and afford our mortgage, bills, etc...

How are other people affording time off?

Re: Affording time off...?

I plan on taking 6 months as well. I would really like to SAHM but DH is fighting me on that. We have some money saved and we both get bonuses in March. DH usually gets an extreamly generous bonus so that should help out alot.

ETA: I do get maternity leave - 6 weeks for vaginal birth, 8 weeks for c/s

We've actually been talking about this in depth lately...we could have me not go back to work on DH's salary by cutting some corners....but ideally, my salary is way too much to lose , we got very used to a certain way of living, and I would love to give my daughter everything in the world she needs, INCLUDING my undivided attention..so I am now calling on all my headhunters to put the word out there that I am looking to have either a home office job, or a job where I work out of the house for 3 days and go in for 2 days....so if I do stay home and NOT work, we would afford it by not leasing a second car, and probably buying an inexpensive one out right, not going out to dinner, Friday, Sat, and Sunday...and me cutting back on my shopping habit:Chat Icon

ETA: MY DH gets a nice hefty bonus in March normally too, but with the market so cra**y recently he is being cautious, and hates spending bonus money he likes to save it and use it for major things, like buying another home or major renovations to the house....

I get 6 weeks paid and then the 6 weeks FMLA

Re: Affording time off...?

Because the baby was a surprise for us, we didn't save ahead of time, but once we found out we started saving. We had about 4 months of me not having to work saved, but then my lovely job decided to fire me when I outed that I was pregnant, soo now I will take 2 months off, and then go back part time for as long as possible.

I went back FT to save to stay home with baby #2. I probably didn't have to but we should be able to keep the same lifestyle while I am out on leave. I plan to stay home about 9-12 months.

Re: Affording time off...?

Well we have been living off DH's salary for over a year now and this past year after paying off some bills we were able to bank a lot of my salary in an "emergency/baby fund". I plan on staying out for at least 3 months if not more (I can take up to 9 months) and when I go back it will be PT, one night a week. I consider myself very lucky to be in this position because between the economy and the high cost of living here it's not easy to figure out.

Re: Affording time off...?

I taught summer school so we could have more of a cushion when I am out. That extra income has already covered the rent and additional expenses that I contribute regularly month to month. We will be fine.

The only thing is that now, since I will have been off of payroll for 3 months, it does not pay for me to work NEXT summer since my summer salary is based on a percentage of the 10 months before it. My summer salary effectively DECREASES next year. We figured out that it is actually cheaper for us to pull her out of day care for the summer and start her up again when I go back to work. I am actually VERY excited about the idea of having a summer with my little girl.

Re: Affording time off...?

We could probably scrape by on DH's salary, but I make decent money and hold the benefits, so it's not really an option for me to stay home. I will probably take off Jan-March, go back to work for April-June and then have the summer with my Chat Icon . My dream scenario would be to get an sabbatical for the spring '09 semester. If that were to happen I would just have to go to school for 9 credits. I would get 3/4 pay and keep my benefits. I wouldn't have to return to work until Sept. 09. I am Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for a sabbatical.

Re: Affording time off...?

The bulk of my compensation is in the form of a bonus (bonus is larger than my base salary). I am considering taking a year off and living off my bonus and savings.

It has yet to be decided.

Re: Affording time off...?

my husbands salary can cover all of the bills should I want to stay out. However, I will return to work, but made provisions to my salary now to ensure I get paid my full salary while out on 14 weeks maternity.

I got fired at 38 weeks pregnant....I didn't sue, even though I really could have. I just took my unemployment and that allowed me to stay home for 5 months.

we've been saving since before we got married for a rainy day, and we try our best to keep our bills low. so Iw ill be taking 4 mos off, 2 with pay, and 2 without. I could stay home, but IT's better for me to keep working and saving our $$ for the future

Re: Affording time off...?

I am taking off the second semester of work. So its about 7 months. First 6 weeks are paid and after that I am on my own. I have a Marriage and Family Therapist license so I may take on private clients while I am on leave. Otherwise I have been saving a substantial part of my paycheck to contribute to our monthly expenses. Basically I don't buy anything for meChat Icon

Just FYI- after the first few months, you won't be able to go out to dinner since your DC won't sit still, you won't have time to shop or want to...Chat Icon
