Food rich in protein
I really need to increase my protein intake. However, I am a VERY picky eater. I do not eat a lot of meat and really need to find my protein elsewhere. Any suggestions?

animal sources are much more complete than vegetable /legumes... excessive soy is also not recommended becuase of the phytoestrogens found in soy products.
I suggest eggs! during pregnancy, my OB said it's virtually impossible to consume too much cholesterol.... and they are in so many different foods...
quiche anyone?

Re: Food rich in protein
Im a vegetarian, and have problems with my protein as well. I try to keep my dairy intake high, I eat avacados and peanuts. I also eat a bowl of bean soup often. I do eat shellfish occasionally as well. The doctor told me I could drink that ensure stuff, but I havent done so yet.

cheese, beans, legumes, peanut butter, nuts, tofu, eggs,
Also, I am not sure if you eat d=seafood or fish, but you could have two servings of it a week.

Re: Food rich in protein
I am a vegetarian, and I try to eat a lot of beans (black beans, chick peas and lentils), raw nuts (mostly almonds), grains rich in protein and dairy. While I don't drink regular milk, I do eat a lot of organic cheeses and yogurt.
I also eat meatless products like veggie burgers, etc.
I used to eat more eggs, but frankly-- they kinda gross me out, so I have not really touched an egg in a while. I did have some veggie quiche on vacay last week, so I guess I am improving. I did slightly gag when I was eating it though!

Re: Food rich in protein
Thanks for the ideas, girls! I will definitely try some of these suggestions! Unfortunately, I do not eat seafood, so that's out of the question, too!!

Re: Food rich in protein
I know that we're not supposed to eat it every day, but fish is great protein
We need to be careful about mercury, but salmon is okay, and really great for a developing brain. Can you eat Salmon 1-2x per week?
Also cottage cheese is super high in protein. If you buy the Friendship Whipped kind....must be whipped, and put it on toast, it tastes like whipped cream cheese! That is also a really good dairy source.
The Fage Greek Yogurt is extrmely high in protein too....and is really yummy mixed with nuts and honey.
Eggs are also really good....omelettes, hard boiled, scrambled....with some dill and cheese....you're making me hungry.

Just be careful with eating too much peanut butter. If you eat too much while you are pg, your baby could develop a peanut allergy, which is one of the worst allergies to have. A friend of mine told me that if you are a peanut lover during pg, you cannot expose your baby to it for the 1st 2 years of his life. I am not sure if this is true, but it is worth checking out!

Regardless of what you eat during pregnancy, you're not supposed to expose your child to peanuts at an early age, especially if anyone in your family has a peanut allergy.
As far as eating peanuts during pregnancy, speak to your doctor. If anyone in your family has peanut allergies, you should probably avoid or limit your peanut intake. I don't have any peanut allergies in my family and I was told it's fine to eat. I eat crackers with peanut butter as a snack most days.
