Tardy Sign In Sheet (middle or high school)
I was wondering if anyone uses a tardy sign in sheet for middle schoolers/high schoolers...
Thanks

You know... that is something that I've always thought about doing and I think it's a really good idea. Maybe I will start it this year.
I like how a tardy sign-in gives you "concrete" evidence that a child is showing up late. It's good for a paper trail if you should ever need one. I know someone who has done it and it has worked in her favor.

I do. I call it a late log. It is a marble notebook that I keep by the door and they sign it with the time when they come in after the bell. It helps at parent teacher conferences.

Re: Tardy Sign In Sheet (middle or high school)
Do you have them sign in whether they have a pass or not and they can state that in their log?
In my school and I am sure most schools- we need a lot of evidence especially for parents to "believe" the teacher...
So, this log would serve that purpose-
I was thinking of a binder with slips already printed out...
Name Date Period Time of arrival Reason for being tardy With a pass or without a pass
No having to stop what I am doing...they come in...they sign in... we can talk about it after...if it becomes a problem it is all there for parents and administrators to see...
Does this sound like a good idea? Anything you think I can add or take away from the sheet?

i like the slip idea. where are you going to have them put it? are you having them staple their pass to it if they have one?

Re: Tardy Sign In Sheet (middle or high school)
the binder would be at the front of the class when they walk in...they would open it up and the slips would already be in the binder...
if they come with a pass they can hand it to me on their way in or put it on my desk...i can look at it and then after class staple it to their slip...
OR It would be possible to just have them staple it to the slip...
management things- what would be easier?

I really like this idea! I need to keep better track of tardies this year.
Maybe I could use this log with the sheets I create for each student who has excessive tardies/cuts.

Re: Tardy Sign In Sheet (middle or high school)
At the school I taught at in NYC we had to have a late log. We'd get a "U" rating if there was not one on our teacher's desk during a surprise observation. Really.
I teach in LI now, though, and I still use it. It keeps kids accountable - I've heard them talk in the halls and say "I gotta hurry up. If I'm late, Miss S. makes me sign the book."
KEEP IT SIMPLE, though. Have a sheet filled out with columns for Date, Name, and Time. It's already disruptive when a student comes in late. Now with a late log, he's late and he needs to find a pen. If you make him stand up there and think of an excuse too, it'll be way too long before he's in his seat and you can go back to your lesson.

My school makes us use a late log. They even comment on it's visibility in observation reports.

I agree. I used it one year and sometimes it was such a pain. There would be like 3 kids waiting to sign in in front of the class. It's distracting. Lateness is a HUGE problem in my building.
