What are the chances I can save my carpet?
As most of you know, we took in a stray and are helping to raise her 7 kittens. We are keeping them in an upstairs bedroom/adjoining bathroom in order to keep them separate from our other cat.
In retrospect, this was a stupid idea, but we are planning to make that bedroom into our baby's nursery once the kittens are weaned and adopted out. We had originally planned to have the carpets professionally steamed, but...
...the kittens are 5 weeks old now and are just starting to become litterbox-trained. Most of the kittens are getting it, but some of them are pooping on the rug outside the box. We go in to check on them and to feed Mom every 3 hours, and every 3 hours there's a new "present" on the carpet.
What are the odds I'm going to be able to save this carpet? I have a feeling we'll wind up ripping it out and getting new carpet before it becomes the baby's room...

From what I know of cats and cat excriment - start looking for a carpet store!
Not to mention, I think I would just want to put new carpet in there since it's going to be the baby's room. KWIM?

Yeah, I know...add it to the list of expenses that we are going to be flooded with.

Poop isn't that bad. Pee is when you have to start getting rid of things.

Exactly what I was going to say. Poop you can just pick up and if there is any residual you can wipe it away.
The urine will soak into the carpet, into the padding, and even into the floor underneath...and cat urine is the most impossible smell EVER to get out. It like defies the laws of nature!!
If it's urine I would say you will need to get a new rug- if it's only poop you might be fine.

I can't count how many times my cat pooped on my living room rug (he had stomach cancer and started not being able to make it to the box). I agree with PP--pee is MUCH more difficult to get rid of...Just pick up the poop, spray, and steam before DC arrives!
