This whole ferber thing...

Exactly HOW much are your kids crying? Like red, real tears or like fussy cranky crying? Joseph very rarely red, real tears cries, but when he does I could never bear to leave him. How much is too much?

I could never get thru it because once I tried- he cried at beyond a level 10 for 2 hours- he screamed like someone was murdering him -my neighbor even said something. I will probably co sleep until he can move into a real bed.

Re: This whole ferber thing...

Same as Marissa, she usually cries at a level 10 for maybe 1-3 minutes and then it dies down a bit. At first, she cried for 20 minutes or so, and it would wax and wane with intensity until she would doze off. Now, most times I can put her in her crib wide awake and she'll fall asleep without even a wimper. On bad days, she'll cry at a level 6 for 2 minutes and then wimper for a minute and then fall right asleep. I've noticed a DRAMATIC change in her sleeping habits. She sleeps sooooooooooooo much better if she puts herself to sleep... it has gotten to the point where once in a while I'll try to nurse her to sleep and she gets frustrated with me and cries until I put her in her crib so she can put herself to sleep Chat Icon

Ferber never worked for us. We tried at bedtime and at naptime on multiple occasions. Never both on the same day, it was just too stressful. She'd cry and cry and get more hysterical until she was hyperventilating and it took over an hour to get her just to calm down. Every baby is different. Go with what works for your family.

We employed some of the tactics from the No-Cry Sleep Solution. Many nights she sleeps through the night, but right now she's cutting 2 teeth at once, so it's understandable that she wakes up in pain. We calm her down and give her a bottle and she drops back off to sleep quickly.

Good luck!

What's the No Cry Sleep Solution?

My problem is that he doesn't sleep thru the night and it's never the same...sometimes 4 hr stretches, sometimes 2 hr stretches. I always try to burp him or rock him or pacify him but he only wants to nurse and goes right back to sleep. I don't know if it's because he's in my bed or just his sleep habits...

Same here. She's either in our room or in our bed. Whichever involves no crying.
I never even attempted CIO really. I tried but one whimper and I was up there bouncing her to sleep.

It's a book with tactics to try to get your child to sleep that are different than Dr. Ferber's method. Some people also like The Baby Whisperer. Here are links to Amazon.

I was talking with my LC because Miranda started waking up at night but I don't feed her because she was sleeping through the night before that. She said that sometimes babies wake up because they just need to "check in".
I know that doesn't help your problem at all but I never thought that a baby would know to wake up looking for mommy at this age.

When I did CIO with Jake it was more like fuss-it-out. He never really cried, he only fussed, he fussed ALOT, but never really to full blown crying or for more than 1/2hr so it was a bit easier for me to handle it. It worked like a charm!
