What breeds?
Of dogs are good for someone who is allergic to them? We are hoping to get a dog when we buy a house in a few months, after the baby is born. DH has been around my brothers new pup and that is a Beagle, and he has had no problems. So I was wondering if their are any other breeds that will have the affect on DH. I just want to check around petfinders and get an idea.
TIA.

Re: What breeds?
Westies are good dogs for people with allergies. I believe you want to find dogs with hair, not fur!
Good Luck!

Poodles, Shitzus, Maltese
Are these yappy dogs? Im not into a yappy dog. Any of these have a "chill" personality, not so jumpy.

Re: What breeds?
Havanese! We adopted one in may and I'm such a huge advocate of the breed now. They're really great if you have kids and they are a "non-shedding" breed. FH is allergic but he's fine around ollie.

Re: What breeds?
I am deathly allergic to dogs and I have terrible asthma that is made significantly worse when I am near dogs. DH and I desperately wanted a dog but I was afraid I'd be allergic. DH had a German Shorthaired Pointer growing up and the family had to put him down about 6 weeks before our wedding. For some reason, I never had a reaction to him. I talked to my asthma/allergy dr and he told me that most people who have allergies to dogs can get any breed, as long as the dog is brought into the home when he/she is a puppy (around 8-10 weeks). Dr. said that my body would develop an immunization to the dog and his dander developed.
We have a dog who is almost 2 and I have never had any problems with him! We got him when he was 8 weeks old and he is a pure bread so that we made sure no other breeds were in the lineage.

Re: What breeds?
My maltese is hypoallergenic, he may be considered a yappy dog though! He has a great tempermant and is actually very calm.

Re: What breeds?
I trained my do so well she does not bark.. She is a Maltese. Not yappy at all. Its how you raise them. Just like a pit bull isnt dangerous unless you raise them to be. So I hope you dont listen to the bad rap the maltese gets.. She is calm, submissive and very low allergy. I recommend this dog HIGHLY, second would be a Havanese.

Re: What breeds?
If you are looking for a biggish dog (which is generally more mellow)... Portuguese Water Dog Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier Irish Water Spaniel Schnauzer
A smaller dog would be... Beddington Terrier Chinese Crested Kerry Blue Terrier Bichon Frise (Yappy) Maltese (can be yappy) and any Poodle.
Stay away from Labradoodles and Cockapoos - they are not hypoallergenic because they are not purebreeds. They are mixed breeds and you don't know for sure wether you are going to get dander or not.
On a side note - some short haired dogs are also low-allergy. We have a Weimaraner and much like the German Shorthaired Pointer - they have very short hair and don't shed much so there is very little allergic reaction. My FIL is highly allergic to dogs and Misty doesn't bother him at all.

Re: What breeds?
I have known several Portugese Water Dogs and none were mellow!
The breed is pretty high-energy and requires a lot of exercise (even into their later years). My ILs' current one is 9 and you'd think he was 2.

Thanks All, I was looking for a bigger dog, and not really crazy about the "trendy" mixes. Im going to check petfinders for some of the above breeds. Thanks Again.

Italian Greyhounds are hypoallergenic. I have horrible allergies, but have never been bothered by our dog.

Re: What breeds?
I didn't think any dog was really hypoallergenic... I thought that was just a gimmick the people who sell designer breeds came up with.

Technically they aren't...the dogs I posted are low allergy. They don't have dander, don't shed much and tend to cause very little allergic reaction.

Re: What breeds?
I think Yorkies and Wheaton Terriers because they dont have fur... not 100% sure on that, but I think that's what I've been told
