TWU fining strikebreakers

As the MTA moves to dock six days' pay from workers who went on strike last month, the transit union is taking steps to do the same for those who crossed the picket lines.

A Transport Workers Union Local 100 committee passed a resolution earlier this week mandating strikebreakers pay fines to the union's Widows and Orphans Fund.

The fines would mirror those being imposed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on the more than 33,000 bus and subway workers who walked off the job Dec. 20. That's two days for each day of the strike - or six days' worth of wages.

"Those who crossed the picket line willfully damaged our ability to sustain the picket and jeopardized our ability to organize any necessary future strike action," the track division committee said in a statement.

The resolution now goes to the local's executive board, which meets Tuesday. It also would strip strikebreakers of their seniority privileges - the ticket to choice assignments with the best conditions and overtime opportunities.

Transit Authority President Lawrence Reuter said during the walkout that hundreds of workers crossed over, but union officials said the number was far smaller, maybe dozens.

Transit workers rejected a tentative deal with the MTA last week. Negotiations have not resumed. The MTA wants a state panel to dictate the terms of a new pact, which the union opposes.

Local 100's executive board also will consider Tuesday calling for a massive labor rally.

"We want to get the local back on a campaign footing and fight for a good contract," said train operator Steve Downs, a member of Transit Workers for a Just Contract.

Strikers will soon be notified when the MTA will start docking their pay for the illegal strike, a spokesman said

Re: TWU fining strikebreakers

I don't understand how the union can fine a worker for crossing the line - they were choosing to obey the law, how can they get fined for that? That seems illegal to me.....

so if you break the law ...you get fined
If you don't follow what your law breaking union says...you get fined?

The strike was illegal, yes. The city is not fining the scabs, the union is. By crossing the picket lines they discredit the union yet reap all the benefits of what those that fought (and broke the law) and are fighting for their contracts, for better pay and better benefits. Scabs cause huge rifts in unions. If a union is not united, then what is it? If only a small percentage of the union workers had actually gone on strike, it would not have been a 'successful' strike.

PS - I'm not saying that I even agree with them having gone on strike in the first place.
