Cervical Blockage

After my CD 3 bloodwork (done by my ob-gyn), I had a sonogram done at her office and the technician said that everything looked normal. I then had my first consult with my RE. Now, 10 DAYS LATER, my ob-gyn calls me back to tell me that my sonogram showed a blockage in my cervix and that I need a saline sonogram.

I am having my results sent to my RE (despite my doctor getting all snippy on me) and will call him to discuss.

In the meantime, I figured I would ask the experts here! Did any of you ladies have any experience with cervical blockages?

And, what exactly is a saline sonogram? Where do I get that done?

TIA!

Re: Cervical Blockage

I'm sorry...I don't know what a cervical blockage is...but I might know what a saline sono is. I believe that might be a water sono....I have had one. They insert water into your uterus to check for any abnormablies (for example shape). Once the water is in side they do a regular internal sono. That test is a piece of cake compared to some others I have had.

I had my watersono in my RE's office.

Re: Cervical Blockage

Cervical Blockage is usually, but not always, caused by surgery to the cervix. Generally a LEEP or Conal Biopsy will create scar tissue and cause a blockage.
Most RE's can work around it and use a different type of catheter depending on how bad the blockage is. It could very well be one of the causes of your IF though, cuz the sperm cannot get through.
Extreme cases may call for a D&C where they remove the scar tissue from your cervix. I had this done last year as did Goldi0218, if you want to ask her about it.
A saline sono is just as the OP described. They insert a catheter into your uterus and inject water while looking at how it flows on a sonogram machine. It's fairly painless, but will give you definite idea on whether you have any cervical issues. I would recommend speaking to your RE about these results and seeing what he/she thinks should be done.Chat Icon

Re: Cervical Blockage

Some cases like my own can be very severe. I was able to get a catheter in...I had many iuis no problem, but wa snot able to get PG they think because of the scar tissue and needed an Emergency c/s with my son because my cervix is literally fused shut. I was told there was nothing that can be done about it Chat Icon

There are many mild cases though. Dont want to scare you. They will tell you much more after the sono Chat Icon

Re: Cervical Blockage

A water sono is no big deal; I had one in May. It isn't much worse than a regular internal sono except that you will probably leak a little afterwards. Nothing that wearing a maxipad for a few hours can't fix.

They may put you on antibiotics a few days before or after your water sono. Since they are going into your uterus, they want to prevent infection.

I had some mild cramping after mine (like menstrual cramps). Good luck!

AND don't ever let a doctor make you feel uncomfortable for seeking a second opinion. She was wrong for getting snippy with you.

Re: Cervical Blockage

Thanks for all the responses!! I spoke with the nurse at my RE's office and my RE will call me after he gets the results from my ob-gyn - should be in a few days.
