shots at petco
anyone get their dog's shots at petco? they are having low cost vaccinations next month. it will cost me $69 instead of a couple hundred at the vet.
I feel like between the visit charge, this shot, that shot, this test i never leave without spending over $200.
sometimes i wonder if all of these shots/tests are really necessary or if it's just about them getting my $$$ ?

Re: shots at petco
When I was growing up we had 4 dogs.. My parents never gave them a heartworm pill and put that flea collar on them.. they never got a shot after 1 year old either.. They all lived normal healthy lives 15-18 years.. So i really dont know either.. I do it because it makes ME feel better for some strange reason.. And she fed them people food!!

I'm paranoid so I shell out the couple of hundred for all the tests at the vet.

Re: shots at petco
thank you!! same thing with my dogs growing up, they never got shots except the rabies. my mother always said the vet was a waste of $$, and they all lived until they were in their late teens.
i try to tell my husband that the dog doesn't need all these shots every year, but he acts like the dog is going to keel over and die if he doesn't get them!!!
I was going to do the Petco thing to appease him.
the vet has no luck trying to get me to get the cats shots. they are indoor cats, where are they going and who is the shots protecting them against ? they look at me like i am the worst person ever.

Re: shots at petco
the shots at petco are exactly the same and there done by a veterinarian who examines your pet first. theres no difference excepts is alot cheaper so i always go there.

Re: shots at petco
Couple of things..
For those of you who said your dogs didn't get shots every year when they were young - that's true. But, dogs also weren't walked, taken to dog parks, beaches, etc. Years ago, people had a dog and kept it in their yard. Now, we take our dogs everywhere. This means that your dog growing up was exposed to very little, your dog now is exposed to a lot more.
I, personally, take Misty everywhere so she gets her full series of shots every year. Raccoons and possums carry lepto, other dogs carry Parvo and Bordatello, there is rabies anywhere...I'd rather not take the chance for $100/year.
I do get the shots done at Petco, it costs $130 for the full series of shots with a full years supply of heartworm pills. They are given by a veterinarian - the name of the vet is LuvMyPet and they are based out of Massapequa.
Well worth the peace of mind to me.

Re: shots at petco
I agree it makes me feel better/peace of mind. But we did walk our dogs when we had had them back then too. No dog parks but we walked them.. just in the neighborhood.
I dont know why nothing ever happened.. We probably got lucky.. If you think about it we did alot of things back then that we would never do now. Like play outside at 5-6 years old with no one watching us. And weird stuff happened back then too. We just got lucky!
This was a good info post for me.. I had no idea Petco offered shots for less money. I am definately going there for them next time.. Do you know if they keep records like a regular office??
