Pond people-Are your fish friendly?

I have to say, every year, our fish would hide in the pond if someone walked over. This year's group is so friendly!!! The come over and hang out and swim in circles. They are like little puppies. I think the difference is that they were born in the pond last fall and we brought them inside and set up tanks and they got used to people coming and going. They are so social!

My sisters fish are always a little skittish in the spring. Within a few weeks, though, they are really friendly and swim right up to you when you walk to the pond. A couple will practically jump out to say hi!
She doesn't take them out, though. She can't - most are over a foot long.

Our fish are friendly only when they are hungry. It's funny to watch them all come up with their mouths open.

Just curious, why do you take them in? How many do you have? We have probably over 30.

yes, when we walk over they come out because they know it is feeding time, but the frogs are not friendly. They jump in the water when we walk by.

Our pond is new and we've only had the fish for a week, but they were skittish at first and I have seen them a lot more the last couple of days. We also just put in some acquatic plants and they love them.

It was October and they were sooo small and we were leaving the big *parents* in for the winter and we didn't want the parents to eat the babies. So we brought them inside and set up 2 10 gallon tanks. They grew and in the spring, we brought them outside. I really think bringing them in made them so used to people. We have 15 babies. Chat Icon With the parents, it would have been 25, but something happened over the winter and they didn't survive. We still have no idea. We think one died and although my grandfather checked everyday, we think that dead fish killed the others b/c he didn't see it to take it out.

How deep is your pond? If it's less than three feet, the fish will die from the cold...my sister had purchased one of those preformed ponds and then read that the fish wouldn't survive the winter. So, she dug a giant four/five foot deep pond and put the fish in there. They have been there for five years - winter, summer and with babies and they have almost all survived.
Two died in the last two years - one got ick and the other had some kind of bloat.

Good question. The thing is, we've had fish for 10 or so years. 2 winters, we brought them inside and set up this whole indoor pond thing in the basement. A few years, left them outside with a water hearter. Another group of years, they hibernated. This was the first year they died. We have no idea what happend.
