Socializing with Kids.

Rudy is just not use to them. Chat Icon He would never hurt them but he acts crazy and wants to play when they are over. My cousin was over the other day with her 2 sons. 4 and 2. If one ran Rudy chased them. Of course my cousin got nervous ( I was and would be even more so if it was my child)

My cousin said he snarled a little. I have seen him do this before and he looks so mean he never follows through with it. If that makes sense.

Now it makes me nervous to have kids in the house. And Im sure people don't want kids in the house.

My aunt and uncle stayed here for a little bit. They had their 3 year old grand daughter with them and Rudy was ok but she wasn't running around the house. She would sit on the couch with him and watch tv Chat Icon But if she went outside with him it was almost like this is Rudy's backyard what are you doing out here.

We socialize him a lot but I guess not enough with kids in the house.

Re: Socializing with Kids.

Yea I think it's really just a matter of having kids over...our kid neighbors come over all the time to use our pool and every time I walk Casey they run up to her....she is SO much better with them now that she sees them pretty often...they were in the pool yesterday and when she saw them she just ran up and sniffed...then ignored them. When Rudy doesn't see them often, he thinks of it as a novelty...invite some kids over (supervised of course!) As for the snarling...was he like "play snarling"..I think I know what you mean...

Re: Socializing with Kids.

My Bullmastiff loves people, esp. kids. When they run he chases them but he is so big he tends to knock them over so we have to watch him carefully. My DHs best friend brings his 5 year old and 3 year old to our pool and Brody just wants to lick their faces all day.
Sometimes he will grunt/snarl because he wants the kids to run after him, helioves being chased, but we can tell his "play voice" apart from his "guard dog" voice. Mainly because he is hardly a guard dog...just LOOKS the part LMAO!Chat Icon

My nephew is here from florida. He is 5. I just woke up and came downstairs to find Rudy and RJ in the living room ALONE. I got a little nervous till I investigated and Rudy was sitting on the cool tile just hanging out Chat Icon FAR from my nephew Chat Icon

oh god - my dog is/still kind of is a nightmare when we have little kids over. He wants to jump all over them and is obsessed with licking their face. It took a lot of training but he is a lot better, still jumps though.

I think one of the best commands a dog can learn is "leave it" bc we tell Murray to leave it when we want him to stay away from the child. Also "off' so he doesnt jump. We keep a light leash on him when the kids come over to control him when they first walk in. After a while, he gets used to them and calms down a lot

This makes me very nervous. He hasn't followed through with it.....yet! It only takes once. Please be careful. I have 2 dogs and a 2 1/2 year old and I've done a lot of reading on the subject of dogs and kids. There is a very good book called "Childproofing your Dog" and it goes over the steps you need to take to work with your dog AND the children in order to keep peace. You may want to get a copy and work with your dog.

You have to remember that your house is your dog's territory. These children are invading it. Dogs are animals and you never know how they are going to act or react. He may be fine on one visit but something may set him off on the next.

I was just thinking about this. We had a situation yesterday, my cousin had her 1 year old over and Katie was so excited she jumped on her and almost knocked her over trying to lick her face. TG my husband caught her. After a few minutes she settled down but we really need to work on her.
